Am in the process of installing a mahogany counter top on an island in a kitchen. My question is, anybody have suggestions on the finish? Poly is a little “plastic” looking, oil has a nice look but durability issues, waterlox is somewhere in between, and old school alkyd varnish is being considered. Am leaning towards the waterlox finish, which would allow overcoating in the future.
Anybody out there have any recommendations?

I have maple counter tops in my kitchen with poly on them. They are holding up great but it is a plastic looking finish if you look at it up close. From across the room you really only see the wood grain.
Hey, I built a hutch with a mahogany top and used osmo brand hard wax high solid finish on it. It's easy to apply, low odor, food safe, easy to touch up and durable. It's handled my 3 young kids and all they can do, wine stains wipe off, and it really brings out the grain in the mahogany. The only issue is expense and availability, though I found it easily online. Good luck
I've done a few wood tops for people and my cabinet guy uses a conversion varnish. It's been a couple of years and no problems yet that I know of.
