I’m building a modest sized house with a Victorian flair to it. Plan shows a gable pediment on the front gable which has an inverted cross in it. I like this one only it is too big and beefy for the house. Fypon has a pitch adjustable one that is very similar, but again, it is too big for the house. The one I need will be around 4′ or 5′ wide. The other thing is that I don’t like to put any wood on the outside of my houses unless it is treated in some way. BTW – the gable pitch is 10:12.
Right now, my plan is to rip down some Azek – I might have enough scraps left over – into ~3″ “boards” to assemble the cross out of that. The cross would be made up of 2 or 3 plys of azek. Then take 2 of these brackets for either side of the cross. I’m also gonna use these same brackets at the porch post/porch header intersection. My main concern are that I think I might need something to make the bottom part of the inverted cross more rigid so that it doesn’t sag? Maybe I need to integrate an extruded aluminum channel into the back? Granted the brackets will provide some support via forming triangles but I’m not sure it will be enough. Secondly, I’m not sure how I will make the bottom finial. I don’t have a lathe or anything like that and I don’t really consider myself a skilled woodworker per se although I probably could be if I had access to the right machines – which I don’t.
The idea is to build something unique, but not way too fancy, and of course, there is that nasty thing called a budget…
Your thoughts are appreciated.
