I just purchased a LS1214FL. Everything is great but one thing. In the left side compound miter position, I can’t get to the 47 degree miter with the 45 degree bevel. THe blade guard hits the permanant fence. I can barely make the 45/45. Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a solution? Do I have a defective saw?

I'm not 100% sure I understand your problem but when I got my new miter saw I mounted it to the stand and didnt realize that I had a bolt sticking up so when I moved the saw to miter with the bevel at 45 it hit on the bolt!
Check to see if there isnt an obstruction - I dont have your particular saw so I may be way off, worth a look though.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked everything. The guard hits the fence. No hidden bolts. It seems to be a design flaw, which really surprises me with this saw. If I remove the guard, all is fine. I thought those days were over.
I have a Makita compond saw to but mine is the 10" model.
Today at work I did what you tried and I dont know if your's has it or not but I have to flip the left side fence over(its hinged) or the right side I take off - it lifts out leaving the low fence.
Does that make sence?
Doug
Yes, that makes sense. However my left fence is flipped over. The guard hits the permanent fence.
Well then I'm lost!

I'd phone Makita and ask them what's up.
I got ahold of Makita. There is nothing wrong with the saw other than an economy move. They redesigned the saw without redesigning the fence. This model can't make a 47 degree miter with a 45 degree bevel. 45 x 45, on the left, is the best it can do. The right side is fine. The next model will fix this problem. While disappointed, I still like the saw. They provided very good customer service.
funny you should bring this up now, as i just bougth that saw yesterday morning. LOL
actually the one i bought is the LS1214LR. hopefully i don't run into the same problem, though i usually take off the back plate and replace it with a hardwood back plate that is fastened to a table that extends 4' in either direction of the saw. i'll actually cut the 45 47 into the back plate. problem solved.
