When you open a given thread to read it, the messages in it are marked "read".

I don't get your hint Dan, when I finish reading, is there a button I can mark all read?
Open the thread and then close it. All of the "New" flags will be reset. But you have to "refresh" by pressing "Recent Posts" to see the results.
