I have been thinking about a way of losing the points in time when my business slows down. I tend to work all out for about two to three months (myself and two employees) and then due to the fact that I have no time to market my business during those busy times, I get a slow down for about three weeks at which time I am bidding and creating the next two month busy period. I decided to hire a friend of mine(a women), to go out about 15 hours a week and drop flyers with a business card and a building contractor referral list to all custom homes under any form of construction. She would also meet with architects, designers and builders in their office. Also, she could go to the building department and mail the flyers to all homes that have taken out a permit. I will pay her 15 dollars per hour plus mileage and reward her with a 100 dollar bonus for every job that I aquire through her service. All of her work will be documented. I could probably make another 60K a year if I was always busy and my employees would never be slow. What do you think?

sounds good... she's gonna cost you about $18K / yr.. plus expenses...plus bonus...
now.. how do you handle the additional admin. she will generate if she is successful..?
you could clone yourself....
or just double your hours...
eegads, what am i sayin?
*Mike, I think that there will be more costs initally due to the fact that there will be so many avenues for her to deal with. After she has been there, seen and delt with all of them, her job will somewhat slow down due to lack of job starts and that will be fine for her since she doesn't want to work to many hours anyway. Once she has met with all of the builders, architects and designers that part of the job will be somewhat over. So she will end up with just flaging homes and possibly permit mailers if I need that to stay busy. I am willing to pay for that service since I do not really like that part of the job; cold calling.
*Been there, done that - successfully. You need to figure on laying out 11% of the gross if she is any good and you want to keep her. Somehow that 11% needs to/will be made up. I found that my more concentrated efforts on the job and a slight increase in prices took care of everything. Couldn't keep her though - someone else tickled her fancy, and she left for greener pastures.Cliff.
*I guess her fancy needed tickling...
