Need to install painted ship lap/T&G ceiling in a southern beach house. I believe I can save some $’s by using MDF instead of poplar. So, the question is……how comfortable would you be installing a painted MDF ceiling in a bath or kitchen. Im sort of leaning toward poplar in the master bath and kitchen and MDF in the secondary bedrooms. Any thought would be appreciated.

Not comfortable at all
I don't like the idea of MDF in moist areas at all, no matter ho it is seals or what promises the manufacturer makes.
My "ideal" material would be FRP over tileboard. If I really wanted a rustic "wood" look, I'd use a Hardie product- they have siding panels made to simulate T-111 siding.
Save money? OK, completely eliminate the drywall and sheathe the walls with Hardie products.
For areas of the home that may see high humidity or moisture, you may want to consider PVC. I believe you can get a panel version of pvc bead board as well. IMO, the plank looks better.

Thanks guys.....appreciate the responses. I think it's narrowed down to cypress or poplar shop lap. Historic accuracy and all that.
Historical Accuracy?
So .... how far behind the house is this privy?
