g’day
I have given up individually dragging around tools to different sites and am now making the semi portable shop. (40′ shipping container wired for 220) so I am now looking for a medium to large compressor. 15 CFM or greater at 90 psi or better. It is very important that it is quiet. I have read that compressors can be quieted by muffling the intake and would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows about this. I am looking for an upright tank from the space perspective but other than that I am seeking input about value for dollar, reliability etc. Thanks in advance

2-stage are more: efficient, reliable, capacitacious(??),expensive.
don't know about quieter.

I can't afford to be affordable anymore
My IR is substantially quieter than smaller compressors. When you get over portability, the added weight muffles. I do use an oversized intake air cleaner, from a car.
Griz, I've been told that the new IR's aren't up to the previous standards. I've only bought used ones. Last time was $350 for 35 cfm, tank rated at 500 psi. I use the 2 stage, with an extra tank, total around 140 gal, at 120 cut-off to get the extra cfm. Take a look at the specs and you'll see what I'm doing.
Sandblasting with a (nominal) 14 cfm works fine this way. Haven't yet hooked up the big one, it's a spare.
If you find a used one, give the repair people a call to see what the pump-up time should be. That's how you tell how much wear it has.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!
get an IR with belt drive for quiet...
