I’m working on an “Historic” building, built in the 1930’s by the CCC’s. And I need to keep the exterior as original as possible.
The roofs are cedar shingle, (stained green), with metal ridge caps, (see picture). The trim pieces at the ends of the ridge caps are 5-inch diameter galvanized metal balls.
After seventy plus years the balls are rusting out. Does anyone know where I can buy new ones?
Also, while I can have the ridge cap custom rolled, if anyone know where I can get it off the shelf I would appreciate a link.
Thanks, Jigs

They show rounded ridge cap on the Home Depot website. It's common. Maybe you'll luck out and it'll be the right size.
Otherwise these folks can custom make it for you. http://www.bbsheetmetal.com/roofing-ridge-hip-caps/index.html
Only place I know of to buy balls is McMaster-Carr. How about the ones that are supposed to go on a flagpole? They come in 5" diameter. http://www.mcmaster.com

Grant, how is that cap attached?

Some face nail or screw thru it which is perfectly acceptable, but I like to nail down clips of the same metal so the nail is under the cap and a 1/2" or so protrudes. Then you bend that 1/2" tail back over the edge of the cap and pop rivet it to the cap.copper p0rn

Checked it out... now I want to buy a 16" copper ball. Doctor, what's wrong with me?
Surely you have some use for a 16" copper ball.copper p0rn
Problem is, I don't think that you can really do anything cool with ONE ball. Probably need several....

Dunno. I'd say seven Tours de France is a really cool achievement for a uniballer.'Man who say it cannot be done should not interrupt man doing it' ~ Chinese proverb

I didn't know you got to keep one in a situation like that, I thought it was a complete product recall. Either way it's proof that they're totally unnecessary.

I have seen that style (with the balls) on relatively new (ie, under 30 years old) buildings, so there's a fair chance that you can find it stock somewhere. But no clue where.
