I am investigating having a metal roof installed on my home. Is ther any advantage/disadvantage to aluminum vs. steel. Some steel samples I have are stone-coated, others have many layers of polymers. I want the longest lasting kind, not the cheapest. One says of the competitor, ‘you can’t walk on Al’ and ‘that stone coating is prone to mildew’ . any advice? I am in Baton Rouge and am limited to contractors who install quality metal products in this area.
Thanks.

I don't think aluminum makes a very good roofing material. If it gets a little stress tear in it, you can rip it in two with your hands. You can't solder it (easily), so your penetrations are dependant on caulk to keep the water out. Don't know about the stone coating mildewing.
