I just recieved an assessment of $50 for the Michigan Construction lien fund. I have had my contractors license for a number of years but am not an active contractor. (I’m one of the knot-see BI’s….:o)…)
It says in the letter….”non-payment of the assessment fee “may” affect the future renewel process of your license.”
does may mean will?
just curious…….

Where did this come from (who sent it)? Unless it came directly from the state board in Lansing, I don't see how it can affect your renewal. Who does the "fund" benefit? I spent over 15 years as an area manager for an asphalt paving company in Michigan, and have filed many lien notices. I've never heard of this, unless it's something new.
It comes from the board, I just got mine today. The lien fund has something to do with reimbersing homeowners who got shafted by crooked contractors. I thought it was a one time only fee, I had to pay it when I got my license but I havent been billed for it in the last two years. Now I suppose its going to be a yearly fee. It makes me feel so good having to pay for other peoples bad work and/or morals. :(
The lien fund not only offers protection for homeowners...it also offers protection for subcontractors and suppliers.
The lien fund assesment is not yearly....it is occasionally assessed to replenish the supply.
I think I've had to pay in about two or three times in 25 years of having a license...but no more. I'm letting you guys feed the machine now!

Didnt know it was occasional(better than yearly I guess.........). I hear ya about the licenses though, half the home owners I work for have licenses and theres commercials for license classes on the radio about once a month.
Are you not required to be licensed to do the work you do? Where I've been licensed it's because of a state mandated threshold... any job over $500 here in WA requires a license.
I was just trying to find some sites that might describe how the lein fund has helped any individuals that had problems with their project. I can't seem to find any. If someone can will you post the link?
(and do I undertand the purpose correctly? I'm a general contractor......I'm a scammer.....I don't pay my suppliers or subs......the fund pays them to protect the innocent homeowners from leins being filed on their property. Is that right?)
thanks,
sam

Sam, if you do work on my home, then absond and leave outstanding bills, I can file a claim against the fund and get reimbursed for your dirty deeds. Of course, the state will be hunting you down...

David, I don't think I need one. If I do, my partner has one. If his wasn't available, I could rent one for pennies.

I would think so Sam.
I got so tired of those fees and the license renewal fees...I just let it all slide. If I ever need a builders license, I know at least 100 people that I will call and pay them a fee for pulling the license.
I think there's more builder licenses in Michigan than car licenses.
