What look do you guys prefer when hanging the upper cabinet over a microwave/hood unit?
a) Set the cabinet flush with all the uppers and let the microwave stick out 3 inches past the cabinets.
b) Set the cabinet 3 inches out from the rest of the uppers so the microwave is flush with the cabinet (or use a 15-inch deep cabinet).
Is there a standard/customary way to handle this very common situation?

a would be standard, but I rarely do standard!

that's exactly what I was thinking.
no design thots ... just make the run flush.
if thought ahead ... bump it out ... skin the sides or install the "preordered flush sides" cabinet .. and all the included trim .. as a focal point. Probably hacking away half the back of the cab and boxing it all out so the inside looks "factory" when the doors are opened to show there's really no storage in there after all!
if it's been preplanned at all .... there's usually no question ... as the additional depth cab has already been ordered.
