We’ve got quite a bit of mildew on our siding in places that get all the midday sun! I’m guessing that that’s from humid inside air working its way through but I don’t know. Some of it is where the kitchen is, some is where the dining room is, and some is by the guest room. The kitchen, I know is a typical culprit, but…
Last year I washed the house with a bleach solution taking all the mildew off but it’s back now with a vengence. A painter friend of mine told me that he had the same problem at his house and what he did was shim out the siding every four or so feet (in other words every four feet along a course horizontally and every 6 or 8 courses vertically) with the smallest spacer/shim in order to give better venting for the humid air from the inside to get out without damaging paint or providing for mildew growing conditions.
Does anyone else know about this kind of approach? It seems way too easy to actually be for real….?
Jed.

The mildew spores are in the air all around, and settle on everything outdoors. I don't think that spacing trick would have any effect on your problem.
There are anti mildew additives for latex paint ...
Behr makes a great deck and mildew wash called Deck Prep. Home Cheapo sells it, pretty cheap too !
