My old home has shiplap siding whose profile no longer is available ( at least in new Jersey.) I’m milling it myself. The original is 1 X 8 by 7/8 pine. It is also hanging vertically in the front of the house whete I need to replace some of it. It appears that I’ll need to put some blocks in the framing to support this. This also raises some insulattion and air leakage issues. When installing should I caulk where the siding overlaps?
A friend proposed that I might consider using sheathing instead and then appling thinner board profiles to it to mimic shiplap. Is this a good idea?
Thanks for your suggestions

John, Is the house sheathed? I got the feeling you are applying the siding directly to the framing. Am i readin something wrong. I wouldn't caulk myself but others might advise you to. Check when you get ready mill to see if the face is wider than the back. Most of it is so that the face is tight and there is a slight space between the boards at the back. skip
*John - Are you sure the profile isn't available? Where are you in NJ? If you can attach a drawing we might be able to give you a source. If you can attach a drawing, show all dimensions.Jeff
