I have an old C-man Miter saw that is begining to show its age as the electronic brake no longer functions. For X-mas I am considering treating myself to a new saw and in the runnings are either a 10 inch slider by craftsman, A standard Dewalt 10 inch, a 10 inch standard Delta, or, a 10 inch Makita.
What are the pros and cons of these? My Budget is set at $200.00. Other than the Brake problem on the craftsman, it is still a decent saw… The slider is pretty cool, esp. at that price!
What saw Brands and sizes do you guys use?

I'd stick to the DeWalt or the Makita.
The DeWalt your thinking of has been in constant use by me for at least 5 yrs. Good solid saw for the money.
I saw it on sale at HD for $200.00 or less this past w/e.
I think I paid over 300 for mine new.

Replace your brushes on your current saw, run for 10 minutes without stopping, and see if the brake works. Typically I have heard folks say that worn brushes cause the brake to not work, and the 10 min break in period came from my DeWalt manual on how to break in new brushes. Take the $200 and buy something else.

Have heard the same thing about the Hitachi brake. New brushes, and it did start working consistantly again.
Intermittently not working again, thanks for reminding me to get new brushes.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Do not, I repeat do not buy the Craftsman 10" slider for $200. Their larger 10" is fine but the smaller one is a POS. It is too light to be stable and accurate and should be bolted to whatever table it is set on or it might tip with a large board on it. Go to Sears and play around with the display.
Sears is pretty good about old parts so try fixing your old one.
In lieu of that look at Dewalt, PC, or Makita. Even look at the other craftsman saws while you are at Sears, you can pick up a basic 12" for around $200 on sale. The non "Pro" craftsman saws are decent for the occasional user or the HO/DIYer while the others listed above will take all that most pros can throw at them.

I use the dewalt 12" double compound. Good saw. I dont waste my time with the 10" anymore since the 12" saws are reasonably priced now. Sounds like you will be able to fix what you have.
