i have a wide open downstairs with recently refinished (just clear) oak floors that are a blonde color. my trim is all painted white and sort of complex.
can (or should) i do a “darker” ebonized sort of handrail to the second floor? i also would like to do this to the stair treads that will have a carpet runner down the middle.
will this not match? should i just do the same color stain on the stair parts as the floor?
thanks for the advice

Greetings merlvem,

damn, am I fat!
It is very common to treat stairs somewhat differently than adjacent floors, and the most common handrail is an almost black dark walnut or a nearly solid varnish stain walnut that looks ebony in certaain light.
my first thought was that you were asking about mixing the stuff in the cans. if you need to to get your samples to the colour you want, that is also a comon thing, just be sure to use the same brand and base

and if you're custom-mixing stain by yourself, be sure to make a note of the formula and where you used it (i.e. "1 part Minwax Colonial Maple, 2 parts Minwax Ipswitch Pine, dining room shoe mold")
nope, i was asking about "conventions" in the house....thanks for the info.my intention is to stain, then use cumulative coats of a 3 to 1 watco (varnish) to poly mix and wet sand.thanks for the help, now i have an argument to make with the wife!
can't help you with THAT tall order.
