HO wants to dress up the diningroom entrance with foam moldings they saw at the Homedepot. It is kind of ornate. I advised them against it because I just don’t think it will stand up as wood would. Now they want to use the foam top and wood for verticle pieces.
My question is: the verticle pieces are likely to be oak. Anybody mix foam and wood (oak) moldings, finish with semigloss paint? I was wondering if the paint would blend everything or foam and wood surfaces would look different? I suppose I could prime the wood, skim over with wood filler, sand and paint – changing the wood surface to smooth surface like the foam?
Thank you in advance for any ideas.

Takes a lot of painting to smooth out oak
I'd find the profile in anything but oak.
oak
Thank you for the info. I will try a sample piece - I think this is only way to know how it will turn out.
foam molding
Thank you for reply. I may end up using another kind of wood molding. I just guessed that kind of molding the HO wants will probably in oak. But profiles are produced in other woods as well, so if I find the molding in poplar, for example, I will use poplar.
I smoothed the end grains of cut plywood with primer and rubbed on wood filler, when I could not put face trim or edge band. With paint finish, it stood up well, but I am not sure how oak will look after this. I will try a sample piece, and again thanks.
