Model of Sphere’s Shop

Sphere | Posted in Photo Gallery on March 28, 2005 12:19pm

I blew off a rainy Easter playing with ideas in wood.  I just feel better seeing in 4D what I am getting myself into.

I arbitraraly chose 1″=1′ for a semi rough scale.

The challange was the hips..getting them temp braced plumb in one plane 53* on the other..I began drilling the “timbers” and glue and pegging with wood matches and bamboo skewers..that got old fast, so out came the brad nailer..LOL

I didn’t get the window and door headers completed ( except for one) due to a beck and call to a tasty Easter Dinner.

The floor joists are also outta scale, it is MUCH easier to make em the same as the other structural beams for nailing ( and I resawed a bunch, in case I screwed up some) .

The second floor will be @ 12′ ( cieling of the shop area) and acess to the sphere is through that hole.

I’ll be working on the sphere this week as time allows, for now the plan is 2 20″ dia. SS mixing bowls.LOL I will add the eyebrow windows ( one at N>E>S>W) and put a night light inside..with some slots cut under the lower bowl, the light will illuminate the “Walls”..just like floods I’ll have on the real deal. Witha copper skin and lighted from the bottom od the sphere, it will be eeeriie..and 4 eyebrows..My 77 YO neighbor will think aliens landed.

I loaded a bunch of sash weights on the second floor, maybe 40 lbs.  Solid as a rock. Even without the hips tied together. Once it is sheathed, it’ll be even better.

Happy Easter ALL…I was haveing fun..watch the Ball GAme, and I am back at it.

I dunno...that things gonna be real ugly. I'm glad you dont live in my neighborhood.

But who am I? It just might end up in the pages of FHB

    I doubt it though.

Ugly is fine..homebuilding its not, and I am just glad to get the tools stored in the dry artistically..any azzwipe can build a shed. it takes a true lunatic to build this.

Enjoy your square, pretty neighbor hood.

Man, I don't HAVE a neighbor hood...unless one house next door and the next closest is 1/2 mile away counts.

What to do?  I am 'hoodless...

An that's the way I like it ! LOL.

Looking like I'll top out at about 38' max. Iffen I get it down on the slope of my planned spot, it wont be visible to too many passers by.

          Gonna be cool either way..

cool model- should make an even cooler shop!

one question- does the aluminum foil go under or over the sheathing?

  5. 4Lorn1 | Mar 28, 2005 04:07am | #13

According to the pyramid power folks a razor blade stored under their structurre stays sharp longer. I guess.

You suppose that in a pyramid shaped shop the saw blades and drill bits would stay sharp longer?

Go for it. Those stodgy neighbors of yours need shaking up.

Now that's coool! Can't wait to see the sphere on top. Thrift store bowling ball would be about the right size...don't you think?

Curious about doors / windows...inset below plane of side or proud?

      Exterior finish?

Man, if I lived anywhere near you, I'd help you build the thing just to see it go up. PJ

sheathed with osb or ply and standing seam copper wrap.

The sphere will have clerestory type windows with eyebrow..try an eyebrow on a circle, outta copper..yikes.

25 yrs ago had a guy working for me who slept under a pyramid.  It was only string, but he was sure it was working wonders.  Sure didn't keep him any sharper.  Alcohol and drugs might have been an influence.PAHS Designer/Builder- Bury it!

      1. 4Lorn1 | Mar 28, 2005 05:58am | #17

Good observation.A lot of folks who push pyramid power could use a little help staying sharp. Different strokes. We all have our cross, or pyramid as it may be, to bear.Edited to add last line.

You better get some safety harnesses and scaffolding on there berfore OSHA sees it. Maybe you could rent it out to Ken, I hear Barbie kicked him out.

  7. JohnT8 | Mar 28, 2005 09:40am | #19

At this point, you might as well make your pyramid/sphere your profile picture.

But I still like the idea of a revolving sphere.  What if you...

Imagine a pyramid.  Then slide a ring partway down from the top (ring around the top).  That gets bolted to the main structure and serves as the track for the sphere.  The mating wheels/track will be on the inside of the sphere (not visible from outside or exposed to weather).

Then you just need an electric motor and some counter weights to let the whole sphere revolve around and around.  At which time, you only need one set of windows, because you can set the sphere to track the sun.  In the winter it tracks it and aligns the window with the sun (allowing all that sunlight to warm the interior), while in the warm months it turns it 180 degrees from the sun, giving you some nice illumination, but no direct heat gain (might need my compass to figure the angles).

Maybe we should be looking at how they balance observatories?  Seems like the same kinda movement.

And a side benefit of having a moving sphere with windows tracking the sun....

That will drive the black helo's nuts!  They like to fly out of the sun, and your sphere is going to look like a big eyeball ... and it keeps following them...  "They" hate to be watched ;)

heeey, why's there somebody knocking on my door...

Have you given thought to doors-was pondering some hinging strategies for the situation.Although not a frequent thing, occasional need to process lumber longer than 10' arises, nice to have a door/doors or window to pass long stuff through.

Yup..being 30' wide I dont see a problem planeing 16' long lumber.  I am also thinking instead of a garage type door for wide stuff...make a drop down ramp ( like a tool trailer)  that is hooked up to a garage door opener and extra pullys and cables.

Then I can open the 3/0 6/8 man door, hit a button and drop the ramp.  wheel in what ever and also get lots of ventilation and light.

I'll see how it works on the model before I commit..or get commited.

I had designed ( or thunk real hard about) a revolving ring under the floor in the sphere, access hatch in the floor...sort of a revolving closet under the belly area.

I doubt I'll get the sphere done this yr. Just the base. Money is tite and the house has priority after the base is dried in and wired.

Also got some serious dental work looming in front of me.$$$$$$$

My crane has a steel ring with several rollers riding on it that the rear cab to rests on.  It's a whole lot heavier (with load) than what you're planning.  Lots of old cranes in scrap yards.  It'll work, just match your load rating.

I can entertain the idea...but it's on the back burner.  Just getting dried in is priority and if nothing has to be factored in that part, the sphere will likely have to wait. Boo-hoo.

100% huh?  pretty good I'd say.

No package yet, our pony express has had a ton of problems, we had 5 or 6 bills ent out that never got there!...and some folks who sent stuff to us that has not showed up..My mom sent an Easter check 2 weeks ago..still not here.

did ya know it costs  bucks to put a stop payment on a check?  Really pizzed me off...We finally called the PO and our carrier may be replaced, if they can find a new one.  I just hope when she gets fired, she don't go "Postal" and start shooting.

I'll be starting our seeds ASAP, it is finally warm enough in the house.

Oh yeah, its a gonna be a go.  I may have to wait on the sphere, till I get the house further along..split priorities.

It would be soooo much easier to finish some things in the house, without haveing to work around all the shop stuff too.

I have hired SamT's expertise and we are finalizing some of the details and TIF..(things I forgot).

Next chance I get I go to County for a permit. Then get some site leveling done. Then, up , up and up some more.
