Molding install aide… howzit work?
I remember reading about how to make a gizmo that would help in measuring & installing base molding up against a corner or sumthin. You take a pice of 1 x 5 x 8 inch long and cut a 1 inch slot down the middle longwise creating a “U” shape.
What I do not remember is HOW to use this!! Anyone know?

i have to admit pure, unadulterated, ignorance of the use of your jig..
however, nice graphic !
Thanks! Micro$oft Paint comes in handy for a quick drawing.
Its called a Preacher Jig, I would assume it got its name because it looks like a priests collar.
If you want to see one in action- Craig Savage, Installing Trim, Taunton DVD or Video.

edit: you can use it to trim windows too when you have corner blocks.

It is known by some as a priest .It is for cutting and scribing base board to length. The cut out fits over the baseboard and it is slid along till it butts the door casing then a line can be penciled down the edge of it to indicate the alignment of the end cut on the base.
I was thinking that might be the way to use it. Thanks!
BTW, "priest"? That must be an interesting story on how that got named.
Dig out the Taunton book on finish carpentry - it's in there, complete w/ pictures of Rez' carpenter's helper using it.

I've always called it a preacher block. And when I use one, I mark with a knife.
Handy for running base, and also for marking siding clapboard for the cuts that butt to trim.
Helps you avoid those annoying joints that are tight on one end, and a little open on the other, because you just marked a tic and assumed it was a 90.
I have a similar device, which I also was wondering about. What is this used for?

That one is for annoying cats.
It's for measuring mobius strips.
That's called a schazman. It's for measuring the kluuts width of the dimbro.
Ah, a multi-versatile tool. I guess I'll keep that one in my toolbox! I'm bidding some dimbro installations right now. (Is kluuts Metric or American Standard?)
The Kluuts system is an ancient system of weights and length measurement passed down through a little known family called the Dimbrogenese, an Eastern Senegalese tribe distantly related to the Fugawees. They were known for their brightly colored bloomers and the now rare white peanut butter. They were also the first to find the tree that fell in the forest when nobody heard it. If you don't believe me, just ask me...I'll tell ya.
Actually, all youse guys are wrong. It is the key to the kingdom. Fits a very special high security padlock. It also unlocks the queen's chastity belt. Just think how history would have been changed if King Henry VIII had one of those locks & keys! They also come in matched pairs for two man security rules for access to nuculer weapons firing keys on ballistic missile subs. Really quite high tech.DonThe GlassMasterworks - If it scratches, I etch it!
