I have a newly completed beach rock fireplace with 1/2 to 3/4 inch mortar filled grout lines, the problem is that there is some residue from the mortar on many of the rocks especially the rocks that have cracks and fissures. I know that I can go to muriatic acid and get most of the residue are there any other methods that are less caustic than this? Also, what can I use to seal the rock and still maintain the natural beauty of the stone without getting a finish that is too glossy, I’m looking for a satin type finish. Any ideas? Thanks all.

John, for cleaning not-so-deep vugs(naturally formed cavity in rock)use a stiff wire brush. For deeper cavities, use a small pick and brush.
Be careful with the acid, many vugs have a lining of different mineral composition, usaually softer in hardness. The acid could eat away this material, thereby actually enlarging the cavity.
For surface mortar residue, use a wire brush. I wouldn't bother with sealing the rock. Depending on species of stone, it probably is not very porous. However, if you really want to seal, go to any tile supply house for stone sealing products. Use the solvent-based, not water-based sealer. I like Glaze-N-Seal products.
