OK…..what`s the most ridiculous tool you`ve ever seen.
Big, small, hand, power…..whateva.
Saw one today at the hardware store…….it was one of those 25 cent plastic pencil sharpeners kids are supposed to have in their pencil pouch for school…..only, it was mounted to a hexagonal shaft, so that it could be chucked into a drill. Came with an assortment of pencils.
I`m sorry…..I just can`t see someone breaking out a drill to sharpen a pencil. I can`t even see being bothered to remove a drill bit from the tool if its already handy to chuck the sharpener.
Howz bout youse? Whatcha seen lately that made ya say “oh, come on now!”?
Ooooh…..thought I might find a pic online before posting…..came up with this one. This is a “high tech” version of the one I saw. I swear….the one I saw was literally the one grammar school kids carry around.
Lemme get this straight….
YOU BANNED REZ?!?!

Yeah, got one of those. How about the cup/eye hook driver attachment also?
Rich.
I'm to lazy to find a picture of it but that tape measurer that was battery operated!
Push the button and it unreels. WTF would you need something like that for?
I think Buck made some comment on here about it when it came out. I think his comments were appropriate.
I think your going to see that there are a lot of bad tools out there.

The one I don't get is the battery powered caulking gun.
Are there people out there that can't squeeze a caulk gun by hand?
seen a few air powered ones I wouldn't mind having....
If you've alot of caulking to be done it is a very effective way to maintain a good consistent bead.
I don't know about the electric ones, but I wouldn't want to be without my pneumatic one. Try glazing a gang of divided-lite storm sashes with a hand-powered caulking gun and then tell me how your forearms feel, LOL....
OTOH, I did see a gadget specifically designed for driving in those new-fangled glazing points...you know, the ones with the little tabs that always catch the tip of the caulking gun and make it hop so you get a bump in your bead, grrrrrrr.
What's ridiculous about the gadget is, those points were designed to make them easier to drive with any plain, ordinary putty knife. So here's a gadget designed just for them?

Hard to believe somebody would pay $17.50 for that.

But it is not this day.
But for $17.50 you get a warning label on the handle.

Don't be too choosy or stingy about whom or how often you love.
Awww, lighten up a little BossHog - lol.
My #2 daughter gave me one of those as a gag Xmas gift a couple of years ago and it's become a treasured (although never used) dust collector in my shop tool chest. We had a lot of fun trying it out and if I remember correctly the nail feeding mechanism actually worked once or twice.
She got married last June and they've just bought a house. Guess what they're getting for Xmas?? - lmao
Does this mean I should take it off my Christmas wish list (;-)
Here's my favourite 'warning label':

I especially like how the print about the sharp edges is large enough to see while driving down the road, but you would actually have to be standing next to it to see that at the bottom is says, "Oh, by the way, the bridge is out."
A bridgeload of irony!
Dino, that's funny!

Shep, I need a battery operated glue and caulk gun. I don't have enough strength in my fingers/hands. I'm very weak. Often, it's a huge struggle to get slightly stiff glue or caulk to release.
I'm probably not the norm.
blue
Blue,
You are the norm. I've been looking for a pneumatic glue gun ever since I saw the cover of JLC about 2 or 3 years ago. The guy had one. There is a company called Mobile Framer's Supply (or something similar) around here that started coming around to the jobsites last spring. They had a pneumatic gluegun for $135. We thought about it and decided to buy it and whoever breaks it, buys a new one.
This thing is great. You can adjust the pressure on the handle, so that it will shoot glue about 2-3'. Here is a pic of Jasen with it. I highly recommend it, especially this time of year.

Tim, thanks for that pic/idea!
We can't get a decent glue gun anywhere anymore. I know that I'm spending well over $150 per year for junk tools that sometimes don't last two jobs!
Maybe that $135 will be the last dollars spent for a while. I'll be talking to my tool guy about getting us one.

How well does it stop? One thing I have to learn again with each different substance in an ordinary manual gun is how long before the end of a run to let up the pressure, because the stuff keeps on coming. Release too late, and you have an extra glob to get rid of.
-- J.S.
As soon as you release the trigger, it stops. That's something I didn't think about before, but with manuel guns, I usually can't just stop glueing, I have to pull back the "plunger"
Ridgid makes an 18volt glue gun too. I saw it when I was at Home Depot the other night.
Tim, how much was that 18v gun?
blue
Blue,
Here is the link to the gun http://www.ridgid.com
and here is the price http://www.homedepot.com
I wish I would have seen this before we bought our pneumatic glue gun. It seems pretty sweet to me, but we've had great success with our gun.
Edit,
By the way, we've been using the Ridigid wormdrive for nearly a year with great success. I think Ridgid tools are worth a serious look.Edit#2. The second link didn't work right. Just click the first link, then "where to buy" and in the keyword search at Home Depot, type in R84040 and it'll take you to the page. The gun is $149.00

I've had good luck with my rigid stuff too Tim. I don't have much: a shop vac and a small compressor.
I bought the small compressor when I found out that it was 15 dollars cheaper and had a year longer warranty than the other leading brand that I was considering. My only beef is that it is heavy.

I have had my doubts about the drill-driven pencil sharpener. A sharp knife generally puts a decent point on my pencils.
I suppose If you were setting up for a large crew and needed a dozen or two sharp pencils on hand the drill powered sharpener might lighten the load a bit. Pretty rare situation for what I do. And even then I don't think I would spend the cash to get that tool for a once-in-blue-moon situation that could still be handled with a tool I have on hand, a good sharp knife.
I get a laugh every time I walk through a store and see 'Realtree' camouflaged wallets and flashlights. Anyone silly enough to buy such a thing, how often do you really need to be covert while using your wallet or flashlight, may get to regret the choice when they drop them at dusk. Digging around in the dark for a flashlight you can't see while you desperately need one has the flavor of self imposed futility.
Most of the discount 'homeowners' tools sets also get a chuckle. For the money you could get some real tools and a tool box to store them. IMO the tool box is the first tool a household needs. Keeps all the rest together and protected.
Recently saw something called a 'Pigtail Fastener', a bit of stiff wire that supposedly eliminates the need for knots. As if knots were a difficult concept. So for $4.50 plus S&H you can get two. Wouldn't it be easier, cheaper, more effective personally to learn how to tie a few simple knots?
o.k., it's not a tool, but it'll fit in a toolbox.

I'm not sure if this counts but several years ago there was a small ad running in major newspapers that said "Universal Picture Hanger For Sale". Send $10 to so-and-so PO Box number.Apparently they got a lot of responses and anyone who ordered a univeral picture hanger then received two 8 d nails in a small box.Go figure.

OK - I'll concede that I may be wrong about the power caulk gun ( note the "may")
here's one that should fit the bill- the Wagner Power Roller.
I bought one a number of years ago, used it once, and put it back in the box. It is such a PITA to clean that its not worth using.
We actually had one of those power rollers. Our home was one of those deals where you provide sweat equity for the downpayment. So we did the painting (interior). The rollers actually worked well but you're right, they had to be cleaned meticulously when work stopped. Then we painted the garage.Concrete block walls, looked fine wihtout paint but HUD required it. The extra thick masonry primer took care of the power roller. $100 shot.
They make great gifts, I know, I've gotten a couple, LOL

ps just kidding folks.
12 volt fish scaler. Like I ever need scale a boatload of fish.
Before Ridgid overhauled their tool line, they came out with right and left handed hammers. I think I saw them in the HD for about a year, then they all disappeared. Big seller.
I cannot tell a lie, I got one. They are comfortable but handle will not go in the Oxcy lights hammer loop. It does fit the hand well and has good vibe protection but looks like someone pimped my hammer.
Not quite a tool, but it fits the thread. DW got a card in the mail, sign up for a subscription to some magazine and get a free cordless mixer (like for mixing cake batter). So she mailed in the card, and in a couiple of weeks, after she had forgotten about it, here comes this little box with dam near a toy battery mixer. It struggled to mix chocolate milk.

I have an ordinary office electric pencil sharpener sash corded to a fireblock, with a box full of pencils taped down next to it. From time to time I'll sharpen up a dozen or more and spread them around the place. Then as they get dull, I return them to the box. Can't find a sharp pencil? Time to run another batch.

Personally, I would only reccomend the "tooless chuck" version.
Looks like some bozo actually took the time to use a chuck key to attach the one in the photo.
Undoubtely it must be one of those "new" SYSTEMS (isen't everything sold on tv today "a system") avail only for a limited time, w/ free shp & hndl, for $14.95.
