I need to move a basement stairwell four feet forward. The well is about 8 and a half feet long and three feet wide. One side rests on/against a concrete block wall. The other side abuts the ends of the ground floor joists(16″ centers).
Doing this job will require cutting through two joists (forward) and building up two joists (backward). I don’t want to install a permanent post(s) along the open side of the stairs, if at all possible. This will require a temporary supporting wall alongside the present and extended stairwell while the work goes on. These are some of the questions I’ll start with: a) how would you set up the supporting wall? b) How do you replace the cut joists? c) How do you support the newly cut joists?
Any thoughts that you have on this would be much appreciated.
