As I keep my eyes open for my next house to ‘muddle’, I keep in mind that moves might be possible.
Anyone ever have a house moved, or move one themselves? What was your take on the experience, and how expensive was it? Someone told me to expect $10-$15/sq ft.

Back in the 1960's and '70's, a friend of ours got rich by doing spec houses by moving them. He'd buy the land, then buy a house to be moved to it, do the foundation and have it moved. He was always surprised at how cheap he could get the moves done, but being a repeat customer probably helped a lot.

We didn't have ours moved, but a moving company raised it so we could put a basement (mostly get rid of the post/pier foundation) under it.
3 years ago it was $4,500 shopping around in the WET pnw.
all I know is each one will be different.
don't think a sq ft number would even get you close.
depends on how far and what kinda roads it has to travel ...
and what utilities have to be dis-reconnected along the way.
probably depends on the size and actual construction of the house too.
moving across the field would be way different than moving from one side of town to the other.

The price the mover gave me was simply for their fee, not the utilities/etc that would be effected. I would imagine it gets into some real $$ if you've got to shut down streets, trim trees, and move power lines.

A friend bought and old barn and moved it. It cost $1,500 whenever the power company han to disconnect a line. Thats $1500 per line!
These guys move houses. Their typical cost seems to be about $40K, based on a $1 house that's about to be razed, and an over-the-water barge move plus a few miles of trucking. I know several people here who have had them bring a house in.

Nickle Bros moved one of our display homes and they were excellent. Utilities, wires and over/under passes etc were the main concern. What has to be shut off disconnected, at what time etc. I used to get a little p'od about the cost per square foot quote. How much was your car per pound? Was it a Yugo or Porsche?
