Today I was ogling my ugly house when it hit me how much I hate the storm windows: aesthetically and practically. Just opening the damn window is a chore, what with those stiff little tabs on the storms. As a consequence, the storms are almost always open anyway. And I think they’re hideous.
The existing windows aren’t historic or lovely or anything: they’re older aluminum sliding types. I’m assuming they’re original to the house (1964).
Might I be sacrificing performance by getting some pretty new replacement windows and losing the storms? I think my preference would be casements; I really like casements.

This isn't a huge investment or anything: there are only two that I definitely want to change, and two more possibly slated for updating.
You will always be better off replacing older windows, even with storms. With today's glass technology, you will save energy and be more comfortable. Be sure to get Low E ans if you go with vinyl, get welded frames and sash.

Why not go for Fiberglass Frames with an R-Value of 10 and wood vernier on the inside.
Casement windows are much more energy efficient than sliding windows. I am planning to replace all double-hungs in my house with FG casements.
