I’m staying the week in a cabin near Boone, NC this week.
Last night is was @ 10 degrees.
I slept closest to the windows.
I was very cold.
This morning I looked at the windows (freezing to the touch).
It looks like they have two panes of glass fused together?? Or just thick glass. No “gas” space or anything between them.
And the mullions are like removable. You can literally put your fingertips behind them and the glass. Aesthetically they look great.
So my questions:
Why would there be a space between the mullions and the glass? It looks purposeful.
Why not just order the windows with the built on mullions and double-glazed w/argon? Seems these all-wood windows in their current state are about the same amount of material, just lacking the Argon.

To find out if the glass is thermal put a pointed object against the glass [like a pen], if the reflection of the points touch you have thermal glass, if not you have thick glass. It sounds like you have “SDL’s” (Simulated Divided Lites). The cost of placing one piece of glass in place and putting a grill over the top as opposed to true divided lites is substantial. Glazing in one pane as opposed to many is considerable cheaper. If they are true “SDL’s” there are dividers between the glass and applied mouldings over the top. The dividers between the glass are only ornamental. If the thermal rating is truly an issue you can cover the windows with a special plastic sold at any home improvement store that is put in place and sealed with a hair dryer.
Does the glass look "fused" or "thick" only at the center of the window or is it true all the way to the edges?
Do the grills (mullions are something different - grills or muntins are the correct terms) have a gap between them and the glass all the way to the edge where the glass meets the sash?
It sounds like you have collapsed glass, but your description is a bit sparse to say for sure.
Glass is the same from center all the way to the edge.
And the grills have an equal space all the way to the sash. Like I had mentioned previously, aesthetically they look 'normal'
And the pen trick? it showed the tip touching. So that is Thermal Glass? Seems to be lacking. They were very cold. Standing 3'+ away I could just 'feel' the cold
I get the part about the cost of individual windows, and grills
But I have seem many windows and doors that had grills that were tight or adhered directly to the glass. Since I am from the south, I did not know if you guys up in the cold temps had a reason for keeping the grills from touching the glass directly.

Possibly the window once had a wider dual pane IG that broke and someone replaced it with a thinner dual pane window. That would explain what you are seeing and why the grills are not touching the glass.
I would agree that the shrink film would help in making the window a lot more comfortable, but if you are there only a week it may not be worth the trouble or the expense.
For a week you might just throw on an extra sweater and and extra blanket when you sleep.

Actually it is every window in the cabin.
I wasn't looking to fix it, this was just a learnin' thread. Just looking to know more stuff.

Is there a grove or space where there might have been retainers fora 2nd paint of glass.
I know that there where tripple pane units and I think that I have heard that the older Pella with internal blinds where not sealed units but had a piece of removalable glass over another pane of glass.
.
A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
so here I sit in Tampa...
colder than a witches teet
;)
There used to be a variety of glass tht was two panes thick with plastic laminate between tt was supposed to be some sort of energy rtesistant in somebodies drems....called energy glaass or something
Applied muntins are common cheap way of making imitation divided lites.

Your down again!??!?!
I've missed you yet another time.
I won;t be home to Tampa til Sunday night.
Yes I heard that it was down to the high 30's one night.
Better'n the northeast I bet.
You described the windows to a T.
I cannot imagine not putting quality windows in a house like this (the house is on the market for 895K), especially in this environment.
Well there is always next year -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
