I am this close to pulling the trigger on a Multimaster..

So what package is best for a Kitchen bath carpentry guy???
I’m leaning towards the XL2 kit with the meatal case and the profilesander and the tile stuff.
only comes with one e-cut blade tho…
and they are pricey…
Highland hardware has this kit for $319.00 plus ~12$ shipping…
should I get more than one size e-cut???
I will probably try Luka’sa blade replacement method when they go bad…
be jonesing for a new tool….

That sounds like a good price.
The metal case, IMO, is a necessity. The plastic one barely holds the MM, let alone all the accessories.
I use the narrower e-cut blade most of the time, but keep some wider ones handy.
I don't have the profile sander attachments, but will get them at some point.
Just get the kit, and figure out what accessories you need after.
I have the profile sander, and I'm not positive it is worth it. Maybe it works ok for fresh wood, but the paper clogs too quickly for what I have. And it is really loud.
http://www.heavydutytools.net has the xl2 package for $319, with free shipping. They've also got another good kit for less moneys, but no metal case. The metal case is a nice one. I don't think it's worth $80 though. But if you need the sanding attachments, the xl2 package is the one.

The metal case is nice. I have the MM with plastic case and I'm ready to just chuck the case. Storing it in a paper bag would be better than the plastic case.
i bought this case, works very well and has a metal container inside for supplies.http://www.coastaltool.com/cgi-bin/SoftCart.exe/other/merriam/carrying_case.htm?L+coastest+jkrw0923ff9c969c+1173547101
Sweet! I'm ordering one. Thanks for the info.
Don't forget the panel raising bits that come with the metal case deal and the DW grinder Mark is throwing in with the plastic case remodeler kit. I walked out of HDT with the latter today.
Bob
Thanks for your tip! HDT website is not letting me order - keeps kicking back the form because it doesn't like my email address - have you ordered from them? Any problems?
I have ordered from them, and had no problems. They're a small company- if you can find a phone #, call them and they'll take care of you. Or if you can just get an email through to them.zak

OK, thanks. They don't answer their phone on the weekend - since I am stuck here at the computer, having browsed all the MM websites, I'm going to try not using the link you so thoughtfully included...
That definitely looks like the best price for the package, & I just browsed a ton of them - thanks again!
Have I mentioned that I'm really excited about this?
Edited 2:31 est to add - bingo! I got it to work this time, & now I'm eagerly waiting for the UPS mant to arrive - thanks again again!

Which one did you get? They did not get many and Fein has been slow getting stuff to them. I am still waiting for my vac attachments and filters (not HDT's fault). About 700 worth of Fein this month.
You will not be unhappy with the service. In case you missed my other pimping posts, they are a small family operation ( only non-blood is a son-in-law) and my local elec. and plumbing supplier. Great folks.
I got the plastic case remodeler, thinking about taking it back and getting the metal case, the dif is it has the profile sander.
Bob
I have been wanting this forever, & my birthday...a big one... is coming up, so I went wild & ordered the whole deluxe shebang - metal case, profile sanders, & all. HDT is also offering a set of panel raising bits, as a bonus - Happy Birthday to me!

Does that mean I have to wait another 2 1/2 years before I can get a MM?.

I guess you got mine, called Mark this AM, out of the metal case ones (sold a few besides you this weekend). Said he will get me one, had DW drop off the plastic case one so someone else could buy it.
Bob
Well, it hasn't come yet, so maybe you still have a chance...
He is quick to ship but dang, he has not had 11 hours at the store yet. No, Mark will honor the orders that come in first, even before me, just that kind of a guy. Would not have it any other way.
Ever since I placed the order, I've been walking around my house, making a list of things to use it on...bought it mainly because I have 37 wooden double-hung windows to rehab, but I can see a LOT of other possibilities.
Meanwhile, I'm glad to have bought it from someone you know - three degrees of BT separation.
I think you will hear only good things from the others here who have bought from them. I guess I am pimping them to some degree but only because they do treat me right. Always did even before mentioning them here. I have no financial interest in them, I do get a few free goodies from them every once and a while but it is not a reward for mentioning them.
Kate, now you got ME going...I had my finger on the "buy it now" button twice already but still haven't pushed it. I see I can get a DW grinder for free too...not that I like DW but I do like free....eeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I STILL need to get a new Bosch jig saw and lookin' at that brand new Bosch table saw w/the collapsable stand..eeeeeeeeeee.
All ya need is oodles of money!!
I feel it comin' on.

Andy - I can't believe that you, of all people, don't already have a multimaster! It's the perfect tool for the old house caregiver!
That's old house, not old caregiver - but that would work, too.
Sorry, Billy - This was to Andy, but I got carried away!

Well...z'long as you bring it up....I went to order it the other day and they were sold out but they're reordering more and should have it in a day or two so I'll order it then....now that I'm just about done with this 364 year old shack...and with me being 55 I figure I have another cpl a dacades + to use it else where on my next projects : )
Ohhhhh...I think I mentioned that I hadn't scored one cause I needed a cpl of other tools first on my list? One being a new jig saw cause my DW broke twice and I was sick of having to pay to repair it.
So I left a bad review about DW tools and service...Long story short...I get a new $170 jig saw, new $130 boombox/charger, and two new 18V bateries in the mail the other day. FREE!!!! WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!
Thats when I went to order the MM.

Good for you! MM is so light & handy, we can still use it when we are really old - while sitting in our wheelchairs!
Hi Kate,
I can't believe I don't have one either. But it's coming, and I know the job that I can use to justify it (and kick myself for not getting it sooner).
Unless I have great karma like Andy and get a bunch of free stuff in the mail -- then I'll just go out and buy it.
Billy
Mark had a big box of Bosch RO sanders getting ready to put online when I was by the other day. Sounded like a good price. Would not wait too long on the extra deal grinder, do not think he had too many. As of yest he did have at least one plastic case MM ( the unused one I took back waiting for metal case version).
Yup - I doodled around for a couple years before biting the bullet - getting bogged down in my window repair project to the point of taking the winter off (good thing I only work for myself! - or not - )
So now I am really psyched! Amazing what a new tool will do!
If any tool can claim to earn back its cost, the MM is it.
Do it....feel the power of the Dark Side...I mean, get a Multi Master.......that's not a mistake, it's rustic
It arrived! My MM came yesterday afternoon, & I have already killed the saw blade - I'm guessing that I should use the grout saw on plaster, henceforth.
Fortunately, before I worked on the plaster, I cut the molding, & scraped a lot of paint using the carbide rasp, & trimmed into the corner on some flooring - What a great tool! Why did I wait so long? Why did I buy the Ryobi, long ago about when I bought the house? (The sandpaper fits the MM.)
The answer to the last two questions centers around the price, & the fact that I'm a stingy Yankee - false economy!
Thanks to those who urged me to take the plunge - to those of you who haven't fallen yet - what are you waiting for? You don't need an AARP card to qualify!
If you try the grout saw on plaster, let me know how it works. I have to make a couple of j-box cuts. I usually just use a utility knife for the plaster, and use the MM for the lath. But if the grout saw works, I might change.
You probably have regular 3-coat, nice looking plaster - mine is very coarse & hard, more like mortar. Probably base coat, but it's the only coat - around here (coastal CT), they often did this & then wallpapered right over it.
Unfortunately, as this house was used a s a down-scale rental for 50 years or so, they texture-painted over the first few layers of wallpaper with another cememt-like, oil based, lead-containing sand paint - the grout blade is the one!
Speaking of the Dark Side, I turned on the TV one morning and there was an infomercial for the MultiMaster. I watched it for about 5 minutes to see how much they were selling it for. Usually most infomercials tell you the price and then give you a special price. This one didn't have any prices at all. They just directed you to a phone number or their website (http://www.multimastertv.com). The infomercial tries to make it sound like the homeowner could save thousands of dollars with the MM. They showed a picture of a brand-new installed kitchen cabinets...implying that it was all done with the MM. I find my MM to be a good tool but the infomercial was definitely overreaching. Has anyone seen it? What's next? Ronco and MM?
I haven't seen that one. I love my Little Giant Ladder, but for the life of me, I can't imagine sitting through an entire half hour about it. I guess I'm not that into Robyn....that's not a mistake, it's rustic
I owe you a big thank you - HDT is indeed a treat to buy from. I placed the order Sunday, my MM arrived Wednesday, & I'm in love!
My lifetime project is a 300-year old house, & opportunities to use the MM are legion -
Thanks again!
Welcome, I just think they are great folks and I want to see them succeed in a big way. I will surely let them know if someone is unhappy with good reason but bet it won't happen.
Bob
Bob...spoke with them the other day...nice people....I'll order as soon as their new shipment comes in.
Question: Is your accent as thick as theirs? WOWWWW! LOL

http://WWW.CLIFFORDRENOVATIONS.COM
Probably not, 20 yrs in the Army and 10 in Wichita, KS probably softened it a little. Three and a half yrs in Lakehurst, NJ probably did some damage too. I used to tell people up there who made fun of my accent that I was from down South where people thought faster than they talked. (;-)
I just hope that Fein gets stuff to them quicker than they have been. Been out in shop building a bookcase and used the turboII with the EZ. It really does a great job. Still not overly impressed with the cost/value considering the lack of atttachments without extra $.
It sure impressed the guys hooking up the computers, data, and security at the Credit Union we have been working on. Could not believe how quiet and efficient it was. Us rednecks have not seen too many if these "fine" tools. It could be that it is not really that quiet, just that I am deaf from all the other vacs I have owned.

I almost went with the turbo but I kept getting bothered by the costs of all the attachments and it bothered me that it only came with a hose. Thats like a car coming without tires to me. Just irked me. Then all the different filter issues became a mind drain..I eventually said F it and went with another sonic blaster Crapsman. Its not like I run the thing all that much. I donno...I probably should have gotten it instead..maybe when I sell this house and have the extra $$$. For now the MM'll get my money.
I put a multi outlet extention cord to my crapsman and run my tools to it and it works for the most part. Actuates the vac when I turn my tools on that are connected to it.Sometimes it blows the built in GFI but not that often and its not that big a deal when it does.
Keepin'my eyes on Ebay.......as usual. Ya never know.

Sure you all have seen this, but I'll repeat it in case- The blades are really expensive, but on another review site I read about making your wood cutting blades by cutting strips from a hand miter saw. I tried it, works great, blades for about $1 each. So now I can ruin them with impunity in the plaster. Merry is taking all credit for the purchase, I said "too expensive", but she got it as soon as I went out of town for work. After the first hole cut in plaster walls, no more complaints about her tool buying. Stan
I think the vac I am happiest with is the Ridgid one that looks like a toolbox. Not too loud, works well, stuff stores onboard out of sight, fits in truck well. I have one of those Craftsman switches and it does fine with saw and RO sander for the automatic part. Right at one third Fein cost, make that almost one fifth if you add all the attachments and filters.
more than enough left to buy a multimaster : )
Just checked the website btw...looks like they haven't gotten any in yet.
Probably next week.

You realize that if you need the HEPA filter, you have to step up to the Turbo III, and spring for another $90 or so for the filter, right? I may break down and do it.
Problem with the turbo 3 is its too big (for me). Thats another thing I'm sorry about.. Bigger ain't always better. I hate having such a big vac...I'd much rather empty it more often. something to think about for you.
I "hate" dragging that gigantic thing around!!!If youre gonna be filling something that big up with dust so often from tool actuated stuff then its time to get a real dust collection system IMO.

http://WWW.CLIFFORDRENOVATIONS.COM
I agree totally about the size. It's the HEPA filter option I want. But I'm getting old, so there probably isn't much more of that kind of work in the future for me. I got one more room to strip the paint off the wood work. The switch (I think the switch) on my existing shop vac quit working, so I may have to have a replacement anyway. I'd love a small Turbo I, but if I have to replace mine, having a HEPA filter would be nice.

I got some accessories from Heckingers.com - carpenter's saw blade kit - many blades for $199., star washer, pair of flexible scraper blades - I googled around, & they seem to have the best prices on accessories. (I don't have metal working tools or skills, or I would do what Luka says & make my own -)
This time I will be more careful with the blades - I kikked the one that came with the kit the first time I used it!

Thanks, T - I've been that close since before Christmas, &, as my birthday is coming up, you've just pushed me over the edge!
It's either a MM or a Tormek sharpening system for me. I ...I....don't know which to go with.
multi master!!!
not even close...
alot of peeps will disagree but I feel the Tormek is a 350$ glorified grinder...
get a piece of plate glass and some wet dry sandpaper
the "scary-sharp" methodtoo many people think you need to spend piles of $$$ and eons of time on sharpening...
not me...Wars of nations are fought to change maps.
But wars of poverty are fought to map change.
I've done all the sharpening systems except Tormek...and I've tried that. It doesn't compair because you have other jigs to do things like scissors, & kitchen knives which I've done by hand for decades but eventually need to be 'set' again. I'll get the MM eventually, it's just a question of which one first. If the extra rock job comes through maybe I'll splurge!
They're both invaluable. I probably use the tormek more. I was just in a hardwood specialty place the other day though, and someone, I dont remember, I almost want to say rigid, but that cant be right. Somebody is making an EXACT replica of the Tormek now (their patent must have expired) and its a few hundred bucks less. Same thing. Actually a few more features. This even had a variable speed, or variable torque control on it. Which would be nice. Big plane irons can bog the tormek down if you get aggressive with them. Accessories cheaper, but identical. And interchangeable. If you have a Tormek, you can use these on it. That might save a buck for ya.
Edit: Jet. And the tormek has come down since I got mine. But the Jet is still a hundred less. Worth it? Dunno.
Real trucks dont have sparkplugs
Edited 3/10/2007 12:09 am by RW
Jet is the manufacturer. I saw it in a catalogue and wondered about it. It might be just what I want, thanks. I had totally forgotten about it.
Jet is Taiwanese and their stuff is actually very competitive in quality with the others like Delta or Powermatic when it comes to shop equipment. They have a 3 hp cabinet saw that sells for two to three hundred less than the Unisaw but it's the same quality saw, and it comes with the Beisemeire fence or for a few bucks less, Jet's own copy of the Beisemire.
Darn, I'm not even totally out of the doghouse for buying the MM and now you tell me there's another "must have" tool?? Just what the heck IS a Tormek?
So convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable Creature, since it enables one to find or make a Reason for everything one has a mind to do. --Benjamin Franklin
"Just what the heck IS a Tormek?"A very well made precision water wheel bench grinder that has all kinds of bells, whistles and jigs for putting razor sharp edges on just about anything. Has a leather strop wheel on the other side of the motor for the final honing process.
If you use and abuse, you gotta sharpen a lot, it does the job in a short time, very precision, and won't ever burn the steel.
Gee, then I'd have to get a bench. And a place to put the bench. The accessories add up pretty quickly.
So convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable Creature, since it enables one to find or make a Reason for everything one has a mind to do. --Benjamin Franklin
I had a Tormek, but found it was too slow for my every day planes and chisels that can get big nicks in them.
I sold it and bought a Baldor 7" low-speed grinder. I'm much happier with it. I have the Oneway Wolverine sharpening system set up on it.
The Tormek is a very nice machine, but not for me.
The metal case is nice, but not exceptional.
The profile sanding kit isn't anything to write home about it, but they pretty much throw it in for free with some packages.
Stocking up on the blades is what will cost you -- they probably would do about as well if they cut the price of the base MM in half and added 10% to the blades. Like HP selling printers.
Are you really convinced the sander aspect of the MM is worth it? I'm not, but I don't have a ton of experience with it.
If I did it again I'd buy the bare bones tool, some extra blades and an after market case that will hold it all. But, the MM itself is da bomb.
-Norm
Thats a really good price......the same thing here is 800 bucks.
Dont spose they sell them there in 240 volt?
Not an exponent of the DILLIGAF system.
I'm not T, but they do have a 240 volt version - maybe on the Fein website, & pricy, but if you get the model# & google it, you may be able to find a deal.
I've just spent the afternoon browsing a jillion websites, & did notice a 240 version.
Pull the trigger already!
I'm a handyman and I'm glad I got the XL2 kit. The metal case is great too.
Yes the XL2 kit costs a bit more, but amortized over several years it's not so much and the IRS and Franchise Tax Board pay 35% of it in tax write-offs.
If your into remodeling dont walk, run to buy the thing. First time i used mine i would have kissed mr fein if he was standing there! Every once in a while a tool comes along that will exceed expectations and this is one tool right up there with the best.
Mike
The metal case also has plenty of room for additional accessories. I'm a DIY'er, and admitted tool junkie, but this was the best X-mas present I ever recieved. I still find new uses for it all the time.
The profile sander attachment is not going to reinvent how you sand things, but having used the other profile sanders out there, it is still a leap forward.
...that's not a mistake, it's rustic
My gripes with the metal case are that the styrofoam insert is kind of chintzy, and not really that well designed to accept more accesories. Besides which, it doesn't really provide an orderly way to store the cord.Certainly better than the typical plastic case, but if I had a do-over I'd seriously consider the Harbor Freight case shown earlier.
So convenient a thing it is to be a reasonable Creature, since it enables one to find or make a Reason for everything one has a mind to do. --Benjamin Franklin
I got that kit, even from Highland - it's 20 minutes away - been super happy with it.
