We are thinking of installing a murphy bed in a first floor room in order to accomodate overnight guests, without having to dedicate the room as a guest bedroom. When the murphy bed is stowed, room would serve as an “away” room or den.Does anyone have experience with or advice on murphy beds?

A little. And I mean just a little. But what I know - you can get hardware that mounts to the cabinet or you can get hardware that basically bolts to the floor and allows one to build a much lighter structure over it. I'm in favor of #2 - lighter cabinet, and better attachment for the bed.
I don't know if you're asking or stating - but if you're asking you have the concept correct. I'll see if I can't drum up today where we got the last set of hardware.

Just seen in my new Rockler mag that they have plans for one.

We used these plans. Worked well. The main thing is that we bought the mechanism to raise and lower the bed easily. Highly recommend!

I stole this sig from someone smarter than I am.
There are a lot of resources here: http://www.allthebrands.com/search.aspx?q=murphy%20beds
Also, try "Off the Wall Beds" in Lincolnwood, IL I can't get their website to load. Maybe they're out of business.
Saw this on TV and thought it looks pretty cool. I've saved the link for ideas (or maybe a purchase) for when we make that change in my husband's office (that currently shares space with a queen size bed for guests).
