Well today I am officially a trim carpentery sub-contractor. Its a small house but its all mine to do! 🙂
Got all the doors in & cased, windows cased & half the base down. Im soo excited!
Lots of headaches though. Working around 4 other trades including the flooring & kitchen cabnet installers.. Argh… Thats frustrating. Almost as frustrating as haveing half the doors with the wrong swing!
Used the No-shim method I read about in F.H.B. to hang the doors. Worked like a charm! I was very suprised how strong they were. Im not sure if the article mentioned it but I glued the casing to the jams as well as nailing them every 12″ or so. Lots of extra strength.
Anyways. Still just small time but working my way up
God Bless Ya!

Ted,
Congrats! Thats a great first step.
A tip or two...I hate bumping into other guys on the job too so I would ask what time they planned on working the next day and try to get there a little earlier to get a jump on the open space. I also would not eat lunch at the same time as others so you had that extra 20 minutes or so (OK, so I don't take a long lunch) of "alone time" on the job while the other subs are eating.
Of course, you can't always do that and sometimes working elbow to elbow is inevitable. I found being Mr. Nice Guy on the job helped alot and I would run my extension cords and let folks tie into my air lines. Sure, folks might call me a softie or sucker but its amazing then to see how many guys would move out of a room you wanted to trim out just so you could get finished. And of course I would return the professional courtesy. Works out well for everyone.
Mike
*That depends on the kind of guys you're working around.I went on a job once where the electrician had the attitude that he controled all the power. Every time I turned around, he had unplugged one of my tools to use my cord for his tools, even though I had run my own #10 in from the pole.Eventually his male end got cut off.from the tool cord that is!
*I"ll have to remember that one Piffin. I would have loved to see his face.
*Good for you Ted!Small..hell, that's plenty o' work!Keep on!Dan-O
*Ted I would love to be in your shoes. Scary yea but if your good at it and enjoy it, then you can't lose.
*Congrats Ted. I wish I could get that excited about a deal.Whats a no shim method? I have my own method but I'm curious about yours.blue
*I found the article I was looking for in FHB Issue # 136. Basically you put the casing on one side of the jam (The swing side) & you use the casing to adjust the reveal & nail it to the jack stud. Once you have it set the way you want it you put some 2 1/2 nails above & below each hing to prevent any sagging. The site super saw my work 7 he thought it was the cats butt!Although I have to give the credit to my dad. I had read how to do it in FHB but I had never tried it. My dad was helping me in the house (He hasnt read FHB) & he came up with the idea on his own. We tried it & it worked. After going back & re-reading the atricle I have perfected it but my dads idea was pretty much the same.Guess Ill have to stop calling him an old fool 'cause he cant program the VCR clock. *Ted, that's how I've always done it. If the hinge side is out of plumb a little, I whack it with my "adjuster". I might be the only guy in the world to carry a 12# sledge into a trim job. I usually place a shim near the strike side latch and shoot that too. blue
*> I might be the only guy in the world to carry a 12# sledge into a trim job. Naw that's pretty standard equipment for the trim guy nowadays. We call it the persuader. If that doesn't work get a bigger hammer, Barry
*Hey guys if you dont use shims is the door good and solid when it gets slammed? Seems like the shims would make it more solid? Am I wrong?
*Sure is good to be talking about important stuff
*After we installed the 1st door with no shim I compared it to a door I had hung that I HAD used shims & the no shim door was actually hung better. I swung & slammed it just to make sure & nothing I mean NOTHING moved.I have to admit I was scepticle at first but Im now a believer.Next week I have to hang a bunch of doors that are U-Jambs. NOt sure if anyone else has used them before. This is my first time.Basically the jamb comes in 3 peices. 2 sides & a top. The casing is already on them all. You put the top piece in then you put the sides in . They are all held together with dowels so you just glue & tap the top piece onto the sides. The system looks interesting. I wonder how it with turn out. Its impossible to put any shims in these doors either.Just a note. The No shim method of hangin doors is only for hollow core doors. Solid core you have to shim I would think.God Bless Ya!Ted Rowell
*Your U-Jamb sounds like my "split-jamb"......pre-hung.....casing attached on both sides.....legs and heads.....and the jamb is "split" into 2 sections......ya hang the hinged part first....then slip in the other section. Uses metal pins to align. I position and set the first "half"......then shim with two opposing shims.......just run them up and down......instead of across......pinch them tight....and nail as usual. On a plumb R.O. .....I'll nail the applied casing first.....then shim......then nail the jambs. Maybe you can adapt this to your doors. Jeff
*Remember to go back and adjust the factory applied door stops. They're never tight at the head, and rarely hold a door closed tight after the knobs are in. Jeff
