I own a booming remodeling company in Atlanta unfortunately my wife has taken a new job in Ringgold, Georgia (Between Dalton and Chatanooga). I really don’t mind moving (the traffic here is killing me) but am considering what to do with my business. We don’t go for 6 months so I’ll finish up the projects I have lined up (barely). Anyone here work in the area? I’d like to stay in business for myself but would consider working for somone else at least for a while. I’m a hands on kinda guy and can do pretty much anything except HVAC work or high end roof framing (although I could do either if given enough time). Any input would be great.

You know, I don't know anything about Georgia, except that I stayed somewhere near Atlanta for two months with a girl when I got out of the Army (does a place called Marietta sound familiar? Not sure if that's the right name). Anyhow, if you own a booming remodeling company, why not keep it going, open a satellite in the new town, and run both, using a trusted, newly "promoted" employee to manage your Atlanta "branch"? You've got six months to select them, train them, and keep things rolling, and you could even commute occassionally or even get an apartment if it will take longer to come up to speed. I'm probably talking out my you-know-what...but if you've got a thriving business, and you seem reluctant to stop it, why not develop a new business plan and build on your current success?
*E. Jason has a good idea although it is a pretty developed one. I guess it depends on how big of a company you are right now? I've followed my wife with her job before but her's took us to Germany for a few years! I shut my business down and it was not very easy to restart but I had no other options. Good luck with the move no matter what you decide.Mike
*At least you can get cheap carpet up there. Pretty area in the hills with the big pines. Just look out for guys asking you to squeel like a pig.
*The cheap carpet and tile is appealing! Its amazing how many factories there are right off I-75. I've thought about trying to expand and run both but have no prospects for someone to run things in Atlanta. I've got three guys now but none of them are really up to that kind of challenge. Anybody in Atlanta that's any good already has there own business. My wife is a youth minister so at least we're instantly plugged into a church with many potential clients! There's a lot of new construction going on because people in Chatannoga are moving to Georgia so their kids can get the HOPE scholarship (Free ride to college if you keep a 3.0). Anybody made the switch from remodeling to new construction? It doesn't seem as much fun. I would guess it becomes more business focussed if you want to make money. I really like the margins in remodeling!
*E,O.K. you let the cat out of the bag regarding margins----let's have them! Whatcha chargin?Thomas
