So I figured I would help my landlord out and refinish the floors in the apartment next to mine, in exchange for some rent of course. I did the nail polish test to see if it was lacquor, no gumminess, so no lacquor. I figured I was good to go. I rented the U-Sand random orbit sander (should be called the U-Can’t Sand It). Worked great on the rest of the place except for the living room. 6 passes with 24 grit and 3 hours would not take care of the finish. It made it through in some areas but was just spinning in others. It was obviously thicker where the previous floor finisher has stopped the applicater and started another stroke but there were also areas where the sander just would not cut through it. Can someone tell me waht this finish might be? My mother (of all people) said it might be bowling alley finish. Just some house info, built in 70, but this is not the original finish, finsh was applied before 91 when my landlord bought the place. Im gonna’ rip through it with a drum sander in the morning. Should have done that in the first place.
