looking at a Johns Manville product

it would be installed over brick with Hardi on top of it.

For just about any fiber cement siding ,the manuf. say to fasten to studs, If your serious about covering brick I would install 5/4 furring glued & nailed to morter joints & install 1" ridged insulation between them a house wrap w/ the siding on top.
You will have some intresting transitions @ window & doorways. You might consider stripping the brick if your serious about this.
according to the Hardie Plank installation instructions...
"...can be installed over braced wood or steel studs spaced a maximum of 24" or directly to minimum 7/16" thick OSB sheathing....."
which I read as the nailboard product is acceptable???
