I’ve got to fasten down 40 sheets of 1/4″ Luan underlayment on Monday. I was planning on using 1/4″ x 1″ narrow crown staples. It’s getting a floating floor on top of it. Anyone done this? Comments.

From the information you give I'd say that's the way to go. I'd use a denser nailing pattern than for thicker material and be absolutely sure the staples aren't overdriven.
Yup, that's what I use.
You ever try removing a piece of ply that was stapled down? Those staple really hold. I probably staple every 3-4" along the edges, and about 6-8" in the field
That's my method as well, but I end up having to take a hammer to about 20% of the staples that don't go down all the way - especially when going over maple flooring.
The I pitty to foo who has to tear it up for the next remodel. =p

If I may be so blunt, why the hell are you stapling luan over maple flooring?I'm sure that the old floor is beat up and ugly but it just sounds so... wrong.

heh ya, I was thinking that also. That old renovation blood sometimes runs thick.
But truth of the matter usually is...
'the customer is always right and a paycheck can feel pretty good.'
I like maple floors too, but not everybody has the same taste. Would get pretty boring otherwise =).

I know. I look back on some of the things that I've done for people because I needed the money and feel a mixture of sadness, shame and regret. Then I remember how I managed to make the house payment that month and don't feel quite so bad.
I'd View Imageuse a divergent narrow crown staple, more hold. Spot Nails has them.
Thanks guys, I picked up a couple of boxes of 1" staples and I'll be a staplin fool tomorrow.
Take two guns a let loose! I usually have trouble if I try to shoot too fast for a small compressor or do not put the gun firm to floor. I did use a cheap Devilbis Air Prod stapler, but now have Hitachi that is a little better tool but can't complain about the little cheaper one.
