When the manf. installation recommendations state a ‘1-1/4″ penetration into a solid wood substrate’ do they mean an 1-1/4″ into a stud or an 1-1/4″ combination of sheathing plus stud? Parts of my house have old 3/4 wood plank sheathing and other parts have 5/8 OSB.
Also wondering what you think of using screws for F/C siding.
thanks

There's tons of stuff in FC installation in the archives. Try searching for Hardi or Fiber Cement. Installation techniques have been discussed to death for many years.
You should also have a look at jameshardie.com for installation instructions specific to your area.
In my case I plan to blind nail with 2" HD galvanized gun nails every 12" through the sheathing only (might hit the occasional stud). I hear the occasional face nail will be necessary, particularly at plank ends.
I believe screws are a no-no. They'd be terribly slow too.

I reread your post and see that you didn't mention hardi specifically, so you might be using a different manufacturer. Either way, be sure to have a look at instructions for your area. There was also a somewhat controversial article in last month's FHB mag that you might want to check out.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
