Naming of screws

umilik | Posted in General Discussion on March 9, 2006 09:08am

The roofer working on my house is using a fastener I’ve never seen before to hold down metal flashing in an area exposed to strong winds. Just picks them up at the supplier, he says; never bothered to learn what they’re called.

It’s a 1/4 x 1″ lag bolt, with a hex washer head, and a fibre washer between the head and whatever it’s driven into.

Can anyone supply the name for this combination?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the name, either. But it is not as bolt, because it doesn't use a nut. The 'fibre' washer is probably neoprene. We call them 'hex head screws with neoprene washers' for sheet metal roofs. We've also used them to hold glass panels on deck posts.

Sounds like what we've got. Thanks for the prompt reply.
Kicking myself for calling it a bolt...

It's probably refered to as a "gasket-head" screw or lag bolt.

At first I thought I was opening this thread to read about a comdey by Shaekespeare.

Now that I've gone farther I see you talking about what I know as a TEK screw.

TEK Screws are self tapping screws, usually for metal.

That's right, butr inaddition to those you picture, there are TEK screws with the neoprene washers too.
The ones with wood threads are technically not TEK screws but often get called that. I just call the ones for metal to wood, "Metal/wood roofing screws" and the yard always knows what i want

Yeah, I would have named them Fred, Joe, Bill...Run out of names real fast when drywalling, though.

aren't all drywall screws " Piffin Screws"?

you don't need to name each one that way.

geez and everyone here would only know what you were talking about if you called it a pole barn screw.

I have named my screws "Miss Daisy."  So when I put them in, I'm driving . . . . ;-)

Anyway, Hilti sells a version of it too called the "Tap-Fast" screw.  Here's the link:

In our neighbourhood, B.C., Canada they are called "Farm Screws".  These are wood screws with a hex head, a concave metal washer and a neoprene washer.

Sounds like a pole barn siding screw. Naming screws... I thought this was another thread.

Jack of all trades and master of none - you got a problem with that?
