Need some assistance. We are going to put carpeting over some 12-1/2″ tiles and need to level the grout grooves with the tile. The tile isn’t too smooth so I’m not concerned with adhesion. What product would you recommend? The groove is probably 1/16 to 1/8″ below the tile surface. The tiles are flat so I should only need to apply the leveler across the groove. I think it should be a pretty simple job, I just need to know the right product to use, and of course, if there is anything I might be overlooking.
Many thanks!

To fill that shallow of depth level with the tile, I would mix up some unsanded grout and fill the joints with a taping knife. A mastic would likely work as well.
Are you putting a pad between the carpet and tile? I wouldnt think 1/8" joint would be too much of a problem.
Good luck.
Yes, a 10lb pad will be installed. I'd rather play it safe so 10 years from now we don't start seeing the squares show through the carpet. Any concerns with the grout adhering to the exisiting grout? If not, this certainly sounds like the simple solution I need. Thanks for not letting me over complicate this . . . the area is about 20 x 16 and shouldn't take too long with a taping knife.
Thanks!

Glue down 1/8" masonite?[email protected]

Fill the joints carefully with SLC?
For the application you have, I think the unsanded grout will stick just fine. Grout that is not cleaned off of tile sticks pretty well... Its not going to get much abuse under a carpet pad. If you have the time, you can try it in a spot to make sure you get what you want.
What about some standard carpet/vct floor fill? Ardex is one name that comes to mind.

I don't think you'd ever see the grout lines transfered... but I also think I'd consider if i ever wanted to remove the carpet and have the tile again...
an option would be 30lb building paper down first...then pad then carpet...

Thanks for all the replys and suggestions.
I think I'll move forward with trying the unsanded grout as this is probably the easiest solution and will also allow the tile to be unveiled some time in the future if desired. Although putting down a 1/8" underlayment or 30lb paper would be fast and thorough, I'd prefer not to raise the carpet any higher than it will be from the remaining floor. The carpet will be transitioning to a hardwood floor which is currently the same height as the tile. Fortunately this transition will only occur in a few doorways.
Thanks,
