I’m remodeling the bathroom, replacing the tub and sink, and wanted to replace the old galvanized drain lines (which had been a big problem with constant clogging) with ABS. So I take my Sawzall into the crawlspace and cut the 1½” drain line about 6″ before its connection to the stack, my plan being to attach ABS there with a no-hub connector.
Horrors! What I find is a pipe so flaked and corroded, and so full of hardened soil, that its inner diameter is less than half original, and the pipe itself if so rotten that it seems hopeless to try and clean it out and keep it in service.
What to do? If I remove the remaining 6″ of 1½” drain line from the stack (lead and oakum type connection), is there some kind of no-hub connector that will go around the outside (about 4″ o.d.) of the flange on the stack, or one which will go inside this flange (~3″ i.d.) to which I can attach the new ABS? Or do I have to call a plumber out to install a new nipple with the lead/oakum connection?
Thanks,
ML
