Need advice on installing exterior fans
I would appreciate advice from builders who have installed outdoor fans under a deck.
We are converting the patio area under our deck to a screened room.
We are installing galivinized 26 guage roofing material.
The electrician has installed the electricl recepticals/junction boxes underneath the deck and the contractor is planning to install the roofing material around them.
To prevent water falling between the deck boards from contacting the recepticals/boxes, the licensed electrician stapled a piece of linoleum (!) (rather than flashing) to the deck board immediately above the recepticals/boxes.
He has assured us this meets code but I have my doubts – to say the least. Commments?
Please advise on what is required to meet code for outdoor wiring that will be exposed to water.

Hmmm. Linoleum. Interesting solution. It sounds like a fair installation considering the situation.
The general rule of thumb is that if the boxes are 3' behind the drip line they don't need to be weather-poof. If this area will be roofed over, either over the deck or a small roof over the fan then the linoleum is meant as a temporary cover only. If not then, barring a very large piece of very durable linoleum or other provision, I would think that weather-proof boxes and fittings would be called for. What counts is the configuration of the setup when it is completed.
When there is any doubt I generally install either aluminum or PVC weather-proof boxes, use sealed fittings, Sealtite and clamshell receptacle or switch covers as needed. I like the newer PVC boxes, as they are rugged, don't corrode and are easy to work with. These sorts of boxes and fittings also, IMHO, provide a more finished appearance for areas that are easily visible. Under a deck, this probably isn't an issue.
In my experience exterior surfaces, even porches and those well under cover, should be resistant to moisture as most of these walls will be hose or pressure washed every few years. Weather-proof versions would have probably increase the price by around $20. It is already installed so I would let it ride as is if I understand the situation. If you wash the walls you will need to tape a garbage bag over the works to keep everything dry. No big deal.
