I am thinking of installing a Pergo floor in my kitchen. It will float on the existing floor and will therefore raise the floor level about 3/8 of an inch. My question is what do I do about my dishwasher in terms of being able to get it out again when it needs repair or replaced? I won’t be able to do that if I just put the Pergo in front of the dishwasher and since there is a counter above it with no room in between the dishwasher and the counter I don’t think I can put the Pergo under the dishwasher, or can I? Am I missing something?
Also my refridgerator has cabnets above it that it almost touches. The cabnets have a trim piece that extends down about 2 inches. I suspect I could trim it with a router but I think there has to be a better way. Can you help me with that too?
Thanks,
Will

The dish washe usually has levelling legs on the front behind the bottom panel. you might be able to raise them.
Refig. does too, but usuall not with the amount of adjustment.
Try them first
*Assuming you have made the proper sacrifices to the appropriate deity you may find that the leveling feet on the dishwasher have an extra 3/8" to play with. So far I have lucked out , mostly, with all the dishwashers. I have asked myself the related question about what would I do to get the dern thing out without butchering the counter if there was no room. Maybe the crowds learned response will save my tail one day. People tend to frown if you tear up their counters.
*If the counters are screwed down, you might be able to loosen or remove the screws and stick a small shim under the edge to raise them a bit. Might be enough to get the D/W out.
*If you do have to shave the trim piece above the fridge, take it off first and trim the top if you can. That way you won't have to try to finish the bottom edge to match the original finish.
*If your existing D/w and fridge sit on top of the existing floor you should have enought room to work. When you try and remove the D/W at a later date place a piece of formica on the floor and tape in place. When moving the fridge do the same thing. If you can remove the trim from the lower edge of the cabinet then cut and replace. If not, trim with downward cutting jigsaw blade with care.
*What is your existing floor? Is there some reason you want to keep it? Unless there's asbestos issues, I would be inclined to rip it out and then put in the pergo, eliminates height problems. Linoleum/vinyl etc would probably only take you an hour to remove..
*A sawzall works great for getting the dishwasher out at a later date. I've had to cut more than a few legs off. The new one will be easier(most have plastic tubs that can be slid under the counter by tilting.
*This is part of what I do for a living. Always do these systematic checks;1. check refrigerator wheels2.check the screw in wheels on dishwasher3.you can put3/8 exterior soffit plywood under dishwasher 4. water wont hurt pergo only acid water ,tomatoes, lemons, urine, etc Only then, will you be able to make your final decision on whether to use pergo or rip the existing floor. Loosening tops cabinets works if possible, but cutting in to the counter top looks like diys. All dishwashers are not the same measurement. If you have to alter the small trim board above fridge, that is minor to the project. You will love pergo if you dont mind mopping. Also it shows everything. But damn it looks great, and it is so easy to install. If you do use it , dont glue the whole joint. glue 3 inches and skip one inch or you will be clamping it, and the joints will look worse. They tend to raise up under a full load of gluee clamped up. Very slow that way also.
