Need interesting ceiling ideas for both foyer & great room. Have 9 foot ceilings & wish to add interest by raising. I am aware of cathedral but have seen others in past articles. Just do not know how to describe to designer & have no idea in which mag I saw these ideas. Am aware of tray but surely there must be some other? As for the other rooms, just plan to use crown mouldings for interest.
Rest assured we do plan to insulate well on a 12/8 roofline for a one story home. But energy cost savings ideas welcomed! MANY THANKS!

Here is one interesting ceiling. If you like it and want to know details let me know.
Perfect! - Send me the details whatever they may be. I suppose I would desribe this as a Tray Ceiling? Have seen a few that are multi-complicated which leads me to not specify tray; yet this one is not overdone. In addition, with attic space, this will provide more space & a perfect place to plop "one more thing" cannot bear to throw away but truly do not need! That is my attic! Xmas storage PLUS!
The tray ceiling pictured was in a room with a low ceiling. I put new collar ties in the attic bt/wn the rafters, about 16" above the existing ceiling. Then I cut the ceiling joists and headered them off to make the soffits. The angle is bevel-cut plywood and the final details are 2x backing and a combination of drywall and square and bullnosed cornerbead and a lot of joint compound. This was about a $4000 project but added considerable value to the home because 50% of the new ceiling was above 7'6" allowing the room to be appraised at full value. Remodeling is seldom "worth what it costs," but this project made money.
There are coffered ceilings, which have what look like beams running in a grid that divides the ceiling into boxes. There are vaulted ceilings where the ceiling curves to join the walls. There are probably others.
Appreciate your reply. Might anyone have actual photo's? Have seen many examples throughout mags but unable to state or identify. Do not want full cathredral for insulation/efficiency reasons. Perhaps this may need to come from designer? Time getting close to winding up his time with us & just hate to be unable to state look desired.

As Danno said....coffered ceilings....depends on how much you wanna spend.
You gave little detail so its hard to say.
Tray is good for a hair more detail but also a bit expensive for the amount of framing it takes not to mention the rock work.
You need to weigh out all the options and costs.
Personally coffered is the nicest to me if it applies to your condition but get ready to pay the price.
FHB has one on the back of a recent issue.
Probably costs more than your and my entire house put together.

Thanks for all of your ideas. The attachments via Uncle Dunc will keep me busy viewing. Doing a bit more research, I composed the following list:
Cathedral, Coffered, Stepped, Tray, Vaulted (perhaps same as Cathedral but believe it is more like a tray?)
Decision will be based upon monies and how our estimates come in on windows, cabinets, etc. for new construction. Whatever, the ceiling will not be elaborate for a somewhat Arts & Crafts design.
Many thanks!
