I was building a stair/balcony rail for some homeowners and was asked to give a price on matching (oak with same edges as railing) sills for the windows. No casement work or trim, just sills/approns. How would someone bid sills? I can get the wood for about four bucks a lin. foot (1×8) but thats about as far as I’ve gotten? Never done a bid on these before. Anybody?

chris... if they have returns.. where you have to miter & glue... figure two hours per...
if they are just a round over figger one hour per..
this is based on nothing...just what i think i could do and walk away whole
*Chris,Compare the stool to the stair treads you already know how to install and charge for. It's just a piece of wood that needs to be fitted on both ends with some judicious cutting, a router pass to ease, round over, or profile the front edge with some extra for the return to the wall and maybe a rabbet on the bottom. Treat the apron as a riser, so what if it's skinny. Visualize the process, you might find you have the same amount of time invested, you already have the skills.
*Chris, an architect/builder I work for does all sheetrock returned windows with clear finished oak (or maple) sills(notched out with ears) and a 1/4 round apron. We route the ears instead of returning them. I've made some simple jigs to crank (ok, grind) them out.I've been charging $70/per (35-55 a house) but I'm bumping it up to 85 for a lot of reasons, bad framing being the biggest. Oh yeah, that is just fabrication and installation (adhesived, screwed, plugged and sanded), no materials...Bid higher than you think
*First time out you may want to bid time and materials.
*Thank you gentelmen,I'm supposed to finish the rails tomorrow, and they were going to stop by to check it all out. They wanted a good guestimate on cost, and they don't seem to be worried about it, I just don't want to charge too much (gouge) or too little and waste my time. I did a quick walk, and everything seems pretty straight/square, so not too much in odd angle cuts. Did'nt even think of it as a stair tread...good call.
