Help… I’m installing a walk-in shower, using an off the shelf (but a good one…) neo-angle 42″ x 42″ shower floor. I’ll probably tile out about 45″to accomodate the glass wall & door. The house is old, the studs – though beefy – are erratic in this particular part of the wall. When hanging my 8’x 45″ cement backing board although I hit three studs, none of them are closer than 8″ from the edge of the CBB. I can hit all the way across in three spots; the top, the bottom and about 3′ off the bottom.
Should I:
a) Hang my membrane directly on the plaster and lath wall, and then fasten the 45″ CBB securely everywhere I can and not worry about the edges?
b) Put up 45″ horizontal sleepers securely fastened across the 3 studs, and toe-nailed in the corner. Then fasten my CBB to this, even though the sleepers will not be fastened at the outside edge except in 3 spots; top, bottom, and 3′ off the bottom
c) Run the CBB all the way out to the next stud – which is about 5′ from the corner – and only tile out 45″ (how do you cover CBB except with tile…?)
Any help?

Be sure your plaster is clean and sound.
Apply a bead of construction adhesive (I swear by PL Premium Polyurethene) every six inches or closer, and just behind the leading outside edge of the cement board.
Screw/fasten to the studs.
Do everything you can to be sure these are installed on a flat a nd plumb plane to avoid ticklish problems with the glass install.
