I am looking for someone in the Los Angeles area with a portable sawmill to cut some large pecan logs down into planks. Anyone know of a source?
Thanks

I was looking for the same thing a while back, and didn't find any. There might be a business opportunity here if somebody wants to buy one of those guided chain saw type portable trailer mills.

John Sprung,
Call woodmiser,... Mizer? heck they have ads in Fine homebuilding occasionally. I know they advertize in Mother Earth News.. They have a list of all of their buyers and use it to refer customers to them..
I tried woodmizer, none within a few hundred miles of LA.

I would talk to tree trimmers, arborists, etc. There's got to be someone who can slice up a log or two. The guys who take out big trees know where the saws are.
Actually, I did ask the Arborist who does all the tree work for Paramount. He didn't know of anybody who saws logs the long way. What comes down around here seems to all go to firewood.

What about WCA?http://www.wcainc.com/greenwaste.asp?display=4And you might try these listings.http://www.ufei.org/urbanwood/SellFinishedLumber.lasso
Oh, you want it sawn the LONG way...
Hey, maybe post on the LA Craigslist and see if anyone bites. It's funny, I know five guys here with portable mills and there are only 7000 people total. Since you have 10,000,000 people down there I would expect about 7142 sawyers. It can't be zero, can it?
dpgoldberg,
Contact woodmiser.. (don't know if they have a website) they will have a list of all of their customers in your area.. call a number up and compare prices..
here's a link to Woodweb 'find a sawyer' page - http://www.woodweb.com/Resources/RSSDGsawyers.html
here's Woodmizer's home website - I don't see anywhere to find a sawyer, but IIRC, one of the options when contacting them by phone is 'find a sawyer' - I know they helped me find one several years ago - http://www.woodmizer.com/en/index.aspx
here's Woodweb's forum - you might give a shout out there and get a response - http://www.woodweb.com/cgi-bin/forums/sawdry.pl
Here is another wood finder.Down never the bottom is a list for saw mills.http://www.woodfinder.com/

maybe he could just pay me to haul out there and back...
hmm... oughta have a new truck for the trip - expenses - fuel surcharge fer sure -
on the other hand, maybe he just oughta buy a mill and sell it when he's done - they don't depreciate much -
"there's enough for everyone"
now that is a plan... keep it for yurself instead of selling...

There are mills somewhere in the area.
Used to visit a buddy in Huntington Beach, the shop next door sharpened band saw blades about 4" wide by the hundreds for local mills.
Somebody is cutting something with them.
You might be able to track down somebody by finding this sharpener I have no idea the name of.
