We have a transition area about 4X5′ between a beveled oak floor going one direction and a wide plank pine floor going the opposite direction. We are looking to lay 3/4″ stone in mortar in this area to match our fireplace, which is an Ohio/Michigan type river rock. The manufactured facing rock is too rounded and too thick for a floor surface. Resources on manufactured flooring stone of this type or suggestions on splitting natural stone would be greatly appreciated. If all else fails, we would consider having a slab cut to fit the area, but would prefer the rock look. Thanks!

Rather than trying to match the fireplace, why not go with a contrasting material? Maybe use slate or granite tiles. They are readily available from tile supply houses, and easy to install.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.
Thanks for the reply. I would consider using a single slab of stone. How would I go about locating such material? What would I call it?
Look in the phone book under marble or stone and start calling stone dealers. They will put you in touch with a fabricator.

How about a piece of solid surface (Corian)? Renewable, one-piece look and affordable.
