All rite u guys what are you using out there?? For starter’s I did my 1st house in t-111, so that’s a no-go/outdated, then I did vinyl (before it was cool) now everyone is all vinyl’ed up and I don’t want to be another cookie cutter house. So that’s out. Cement/hardie is new around these parts and there is a bit of work installing/issues etc (they don’t even warranty it up here any more!).. so what is out there that looks good, some what fire resistance (no fire dept.) last a while etc..

I'm still pleased as punch with our 20-year-old Masonite hardboard siding, but you can't get the stuff anymore. There are some other newer hardboard products available, but their track records are spotty.
I'd frankly hate to have to decide these days, in that there really isn't a good choice. Would probably be a tossup between your better quality vinyl and continuous steel.
SIDING PROJECT

most of what is in his first post might answer your questions.
seems he might be from alaska...............
had t-111, but has since used vinyl and that was b/4 vinyl was cool.............
doesn't seems like he wants shingles, at least w/o fireproofing because of lack of fire responders........
and perhaps it should last, maybe not a lifetime-but longer than t-111 for sure.
I probably just made up for your lack of lower case.
Check out LP Smartside. 50-year guarantee (for whatever that's worth); a full line of trim, 4 x 8 sheets, fascia, soffit. Cuts and handles nicely.
Yeah, Smartside is probably the closest thing currently made to the Masonite hardboard I was talking about. Worth considering.
LOTS OF PAINTING...OR SO I'VE HEARD...TRUE? (sorry bout the caps)
Dunno about "lots" of
Dunno about "lots" of painting. Yes, believe it or not, some siding should be painted. About every 12-15 years, in my experience.

Huh? Haven't heard of that. Why not?
Based on your name I'm assuming you're in Alaska, right?
yup AK
i don't know but its in the 1st 2 lines of there warrenty, kind of like "free shiping"...to the lower 49 only..:(...
I would have suggested fibercement, but I had no idea the warranty didn't cover Alaska. First I've ever heard of that. You might be better off with LP Smartside then. It is an OSB backer, but I think they at least treat it to prevent fire and rot. I don't have any personal experience with it, and until Miratec came along I didn't trust hardboard. Whatever they are treating that stuff with, it seems to be doing a good job. Granted, its only been on my house for five years, but when they say that it is rot-resistant, than that is exactly what it is.
