What would you recommend on reparing this wall. It’s the stairwell wall that leads to the entrance of my basement. It’s looks like concrete that is just coming off in chunks.
Should I just knock it all down with a chisel, install metal lathe and then pickup some Quickcrete Stucco mix and apply it on. However, instead of the textured look, I would just install it smooth.

A parge coat is all that was- over the brickwork. Knock all the loose stuff off like you said with achisle. then apply new. I would add a bit of portland to quickcrete though. is is usually poor. I would also recommend that you wash it down first, and paint on some bonding agent first, according to directions. Anyplace that sells quickcrete or sakrete mixes will have a product for that. It is basicly a white glue that seals the old so it won't suck moisture out of the mix too quick and it drys slightly tacky for a suction bond increase.

Agree with piffen, except for product selection.
Move up in price to Thoroseal products. They have a whole line of patching and sealing products, plus the primer/mixing agent made for thier line. The primer used to be called Acryl 60, but they may have changed the name in the last few years.
I have used Thoro products for many years and find them far superior to Sakrite or Quickcrete products. Thoro products are way more expensive, but I sleep better not worrying about failures and call backs in the future.

Thanks all. I've gone some hairline cracks here and there so I was plannning to knock it all then and then recoat. I took a look at thoroseals site - http://www.thoroproducts.com/product_family.asp?family=CONCRETE
Unless I'm looking at it wrong, but the concrete products they carry are mainy for patching.
Thought that is what you are doing.
Dave
Yes, but I was not planning on spot patching. I was planning on rechiseling the entire top off and redo it from scratch since there are hairline cracks here and there.
Might as well only do it 1X than redoing it next year.
