need tips/advice for alarm systems
looking at doing some sort of alarm system. looks like everything will have to be wireless. [when i was building i was told not to worry about prewire, big mistake]
i’m in the dark on wireless,so just doing a little browsing on ebay heres a x-10 system i found.

what i can see of the wireless window switches, they look pretty ugly with a seperate box to the side, but if thats what i have to have in wireless……….
just a few numbers 5 doors, 18 windows, and would like to have something on the garage thats 125′ away,is that possible with wirless? i could hardwire those by digging trench.
anyway throw out some direction i should be looking for. oh, would just as soon not have a monitored system at this point. thanks larry
YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE – WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN’T
MOVE AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN’T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE
DUCT TAPE.

just about everything i see these days is wireless... 300ft is the limit i see on some... Gunner knows about this stuff... i did go with wired cameras... but most alarm stuff is wireless... alot of stuff says RF now but i guess thats just another name for wireless...
lots of systems on ebay... i have a wireless system with a dailer on my warehouse... it dails my cell phone and sends a code... tells me if it's the office out in the warehouse... a motion or a door... only rings once so easy to miss the call but shows as a missed call with the code... i got it off ebay... first alert system but same as x-10.... i have the cameras on the computer so if the alarm goes off i can look online at the cameras and see whats up... i need to spend more time set'n that up better... but...

Unless things have changed those boxes all contain 9V batteries - PITA!

If you don't have pets you could use motions and not have to worry about all those clunky window contacts. Put a motion in each room. Glass breaks are another option. If you have an accessible attic you can install motions and glass breaks fairly easily. Your roof line intersecting with the headers of your doors and windows usually make it too much of a PIA to drill contacts on the tops. But if you have a basement or a good crawl space it's not that hard to drill in hardwired door and window contacts.
Pet Immune motions are available they are hard to adjust but some are pretty good.
I don't know anything about the X-10 system. I'm a Bosch man myself, the installation makes the system in mot cases though.
C'mon C'mon and do..... The locomotion with me.

I recently bought an installed a large system from these guys: http://www.alarmsystemstore.com and was very pleased with the price and support. I dealt with "Sean" who was very helpful...

I just bought a replacement system from these guys as well (alarmsystemstore). Good service, answered some of my questions. I installed it and it's working fine. I already had all the sensors installed (hardwired), just had to change the termination resistors at the end of each string of sensors.Bob Chapman
X-10 is trademark or a system of controls that use the powerline for sending control commands.
But the name has been expanded to cover almost everything.
Don't know what is on the alarms.
Make sure that you have a supervised systems. Old basic RF alarms would only send a door open command.
You want one that "continuous" reports it is status.
I worked on one house that had such a system. I believe that the units where made by GE.
