I’m getting ready to screw and glue a new layer of drywall on the ceiling of my bathroom over some horribly peeling paint on hairline cracked plaster. Got a couple of questions to verify:
1. What kind of drywall should I use? Just 1/2″ ceiling rock? joists are 16″ o.c. Or since its a bathroom is there a different kind of rock to use?
2. I’m going to screw and glue with standard rock glue. OK?
3. I’m going to use no-coat corner beads for the first time. How should I prep the existing latex painted walls to take the mud needed to bed and smooth out. Prime over the paint? Or should I just go for it?
4. Its a bathroom: What kind of primer and paint should I use?
Thanks.

Why is the paint peeling? make sure you dont have an active leak before you proceed.
Greenboard would be better, but standard drywall can be fine if high moisture levels are controlled.
regular glue is fine
If the existing paint is flat or semi you might be ok, but if its glossy you may have trouble with the mud bonding. maybe you could use a deglosser, someone else can probably answer that one better
You can even use 3/8" drywall. Since you'll be gluing it in addition to using screws, which is a good idea regardless, you won't have any problems with sagging.
For bathrooms with high humidity, greenboard (moisture-resistant) drywall is a good idea, but since you have a plaster ceiling, I'm assuming it's an older house and they usually "breathe" a lot more than newer, tighter homes so moisture is probably not an issue.
I've never used the No-Coat product, but priming before mud is good insurance and I usually do it if the painted wall has any sort of sheen.
There are kitchen and bath paints which have extra mildew resistance and are very washable. I've used them in bathrooms where mildew has been a problem, but usually they're not necessary.
For a bathroom I'd use moisture-resistant "greenboard" or one of the new paperless drywall products.
i aleways thought that you wern't suppose to use greenboard on a clg? the new paperless stuff would probably be ok.if a man speaks in the forest, and there's not a woman to hear him,is he still wrong?
Greenboard is not recommended for ceilings because it doesn't have the same sag resistance as regular drywall, but I've done it and seen it done with no problems at all. In this particular case, he will be gluing the new drywall to the existing ceiling so sagging should not be an issue.
For the paint either use bathroom paint or add a fungicide to regular paint. (The fungicide is usually listed for "exterior use only", but is fine for use in a bathroom ceiling.)
one way of "de glossing" painted walls is to scrub it with TSP
