Hey guys,
I just received a new 10″ Hitachi Slider that was on sale last week on Amazon. This is my first Hitachi slider (been using Bosch). While unpacking and setting this thing up, I noticed that the blade hits the plastic guard and does not allow you to bring the blade all the way down.
I read through the instructions a couple times. Regarding that plastic guard, it seems like it’s supposed to be there (versus there for shipping purposes only). Am I seeing things here or what? As you can see from the pics, with the guard in place, the saw hits it and cannot make a full cut. If I take out the little plastic guard (held on by 2 phillips screws), the blade goes in maybe another 1/2 – 3/4 inch, making a full cut.
Am I missing something here? Is that supposed to come off? From all the pictures in the manual it looks like it’s supposed to be there!
Any insight would be appreciated.

I have an older version of that saw, and you cut a slot in that plastic the first time you make a full cut...if your saw is like mine. Seems odd I supose.
I tried revising my first post to add these pics, but I could only delete pics..versus add new ones. Are you serious???? I mean in regards to cutting through that plastic guard? It seems like the longer sliding mechanism is too long....as if it was intended for a different saw...lol
My 8'' needed cut into.............I think. The plastic is much bigger at the back of the saw. What's the directions say?A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

That plastic dodad is mainly for deflecting little pieces of wood you launch with the blade in a relatively safe direction (rather than ricocheting back to hit you). Here is a picture that shows what is left of that plastic thing on my saw.Do be careful, on my saw it is possible to cut the metal structure below the table (just don't set the depth of cut too deep). It is strange that it is even possible to do that.
Whack right through it!
I have the same saw. On your first cut it will make a slot in it.
Headstrong, I'll take on anyone!
Also, don't forget to flip the left side fence when you bevel. The blade will cut through the fence.
Don't ask how I know, oops.

Wow..eveyone here seems to say the same thing...it's normal and to cut through it. Here I thought maybe I had a defect part (meaning maybe the sliding part that holds that plastic guard on). I figured maybe they had different ones for the 12", 10", etc, and that me being the lucky one..got a mixed up part.
So out of curiosity...why does anyone think Hitachi did it this way? I mean instead of them providing a notch in it to begin with? Instead of cutting it off the first time I use the saw, would removing it (by taking off the 2 screws) be ok too? I was just wondering that if when I do go to cut it off...chances are it could just shatter to pieces also?
Either way, I'm glad I'm not the only one who had this issue...lol
Thanks to eveyone for the input.
Other than that how do you like the saw? Came within a whisker of jumpin' on that deal- $300 seemed like a real deal.
