Post some pics, if it's in the kalamazoo area I'm about 20 minutes from there.
I'm only half as dumb as I look.
You got a framer yet?
If so who'd you get?
I'm only half as dumb as I look.
sounds like his FIL is the framer.

I couldn't tell, you may be right though.
I am in his general area and could squeeze him in before my next frame if he didn't have one. I'm only half as dumb as I look.
you stay busy year round..?.
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot
?
Yes sir. I just ended up with a short spell in between the last frame and the next.
So I have been siding and putting decks on the ones I just finished.
I like it, but want to get started framing another one soon.
I care, after all it's my company.
Good thing is I just picked up a couple of framers from Kalamazoo, the OP's profile says he is from there so I am assuming that his house is being built there. It would be a few minute drive for them and about 20-30min. for me.
I asked the OP because K-zoo has more than their fair share of people who shouldn't be swinging a hammer for a living. And I have a few weeks till the next foundation gets put in. So it would be a win-win situation.
If it is a 5000 sq. ft house I'd probably turn it down because of the time frame.
I care, after all it's my company.
good to hear that...I gave up doing residential years ago, just too dang hectic......do you do decks with "exotics" like redwood or is it mostly the synthetic stuff ? the mooch in me wonders what you do with the scraps of real wood.
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot
?
I build adirondack chairs with the scrap mostly.
I have built a half dozen or so in the last year out of cedar and redwood.
I built my neighbor an outdoor table with leftovers from a select cedar gazebo I built last year.
I use alot of the scraps off my projects in my wood shop, I have nicer cabinets in the garage than the house. :)
Synthetics are becoming more popular, my GC has started using a vinyl 1-1/2 thick t&G product that seems fairly nice. I like the matching railing system alot. I care, after all it's my company.
What are you lookin to mooch? I have alot of stuff in the garage thats collecting dust.
Curly Maple, some mahogany, some birdseye Maple, select cedar 4x4's and some 2x stock. Not alot of any one kind but the curly maple. I care, after all it's my company.
well..........you know ......whatever, :) cedar is handy, and maple, and mahogany.....
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot
?
Let me know what you want.
It's yours if I have it. Most of it is just getting trampled on in the garage. I'm keeping the birdseye though.
What are you wanting to make? I care, after all it's my company.
.....oh wow,
I have no plans, I might make simple landscape light fixtures with
what ever I get my mitts on, they last a couple years and then I replace them....sometimes I actually BUY lumber
but lately the Big C in ThreeOaks has got the "Chicago Folks " gleam in their eye, and will only sell 16's of 2 X cedar.
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot
?
The cedar 4x4's are up your alley then. I have quite a few of those, without a single knot in them. Good stuff. Free to me, free to you. Deal?
If you post a picture of what you want I can turn something like it on my lathe.
The electrical stuff is all yours though.
Sooner the better, works probably gonna get busy with everyone trying to get their house framed by winter. But thats at least a few weeks away. I care, after all it's my company.
free stuff.........? I accept your offer, I can run up there the first weekend after the holiday..................okayoh man.. free stuff !!!and thanks for offering to turn them. I only cut and bevel the sides of whatever shape pops inside my cranium......turning has never been an option, .........I have to think about thisoh man..free stuff.

I may heading that way in the next week or so.
My brothers old lady is in a hospital in FT. Wayne.
I'll be able to meet you around the border. I can let you know soon. I care, after all it's my company.

She's fine, I think she's milkin it. :)
She just has to have some tests ran.
Less of a drive for you. I care, after all it's my company.
I'm still dumfounded....wherever you want to meet is fine. just curious........is there a golf course near the hospital ?.

It needs to find a home dude, my garage is heaping full of lumber I "might" use someday. I have no room left for anything.
Much longer and it will not be worth anything. If you can use it, by all means do so.
I didn't pay for it, and I have built everything I need with the 4x4's.
I care, after all it's my company.
I'm just not used to someone giving me anything !
looking forward to using itTom.
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot
?
Not a big deal if you are going to use it, it's not doing me any good in the garage.
I'll let you know when I am going in your direction, so you can get it. I care, after all it's my company.
OK.
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot

Hey man what length and how many 4x4's are you lookin for?
With the length I can tell you how many I have. I care, after all it's my company.
SH!t I dunno, uh mebbe 4' or longer.....??how many ...depends on you .
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot
?
Gimme a minute I go and see how many 4 footers I have.
At that length I might only have 3-4. I care, after all it's my company.
I have 2 @5' and 1@ 32" or so.
I have a hlf dozen 2x6 cedar drops around 32" as well.
I hope thats enough. I care, after all it's my company.
that's perfect .......

Cool man they are yours. Glad they are getting a good home. I care, after all it's my company.
...........suhweet.

the four footers was just a number outta my a** Matt, I guess long enough to be workable on a router table then.
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot

I haven't forgot about your lumber either, stuff has been pretty busy around here. If you want to come get it you can. I am not sure when I am going to be heading that way again. Might be awhile.
I never made it down to Ft. Wayne so thats why I didn't contact you.
I don't have the keys to success.
I know how to pick the locks.
NP.....thanks for the heads up though..been gettin my firewood put up and have had only a couple days off myself...whatever you do ......don't stop working....:).
.
.
.Wer ist jetzt der Idiot

Getting cold in the mornings, you better get goin on the firewood.
If you still want the cedar let me know, you may have to come get it though.
cedar..yes I would be happy to pick it up...I don't when is good for both of us..I'm usually off on Sunday.
.

Sundays are good for me as well just pick one that you are not cutting firewood. :)A broom is drearily sweeping up the broken pieces of yesterdays life.

Big C is who I deal with. The Schoolcraft MI branch, good people great materials.
Big C bought my old truss company Michiana Truss. THey hired the old owner Pat O'keefe and he is now my salesman for them. He is a good man.
Thats how my cedar came 16' lengths and a HUGE pricetag to the homeowners. The lumberyard out of Grand Rapids sent to many and said they didn't want to drive an hour each way to pick up a few hundred dollars in wood. YAHTZEE! So I got them for free. I care, after all it's my company.
....and many Thanks Stilleto.

Myself! worked for a general contractor for 4years then as a trim carpenter for the last 4 years with on and off deck/framing when the trim gets slow. And btw FIL is the photogropher and watch dog at night(only lives 3 houses down.....o.k. let me have it for building so close to the inlaws!) :)

You framing it by yourself?
Where is it? How many sq. ft.
You want a hand? I care, after all it's my company.
The house is right on the Schoolcraft/Portage line. And about the help...I dont like asking but if you are looking for something to do the expereinced hand would be apprecieated, and if your busy no hard feelings. They tell me that the walls should be poured this week. Two weeks for the walls to cure before backfill and then the framing should start. I assume form the posts I have seen earlyer that you are a framer correct? Fulltime or general contractor? Anyway talk to you guys later.
Framer, carpenter. Not a GC. Licensed and insured.
I can swing it then if you want a hand. I have a crew and if you want the group of us banging away at it let me know.
Two of my guys live in K-zoo. I have posted pictures here of the recent frames I have done. If you want to see them I will post some for you.
When you are ready let me know, be glad to help. (269) 317-1632.
My name is Matt. I care, after all it's my company.
Hey I love that you put a 2 by down for your rafters to land on and not just the osb. When it gets time to frame I'll give you a buzz.
Here are a couple pics of the progress.
try the pic again
That will work for me. Call when the time gets closer.
What lumber yard are you going through? Big C in Schoolcraft is who I use, good place.
If you want to see some work of mine first hand, let me know. The subdivision I am framing in Battle Creek has one that has not been sheetrocked yet. And two that have been.
How many sq ft. is your place going to be?
Keep posting the pics, that way I know if I need to hurry up and finish my stuff up.
I care, after all it's my company.
Thank again (or for the first time) for your offer to help.
I am going through UBC formaly wicks. I have had good service there and have build some rapore with some people.
The house will be 1850sq ft. with a 3 car split garage. the first stall is straight ahead as you drive up the drive way and you have to make a 90 right to get into the two car area. I didnt want to see that much garage door form the front of the house.
I'll keep posting pics.
Plan on buring my radon this weekend and grading the bacement floor then when the plumbers do there undergound I just have to re-grade the area where they worked.
1850 sq ft. That should be a fairly quick frame without seeing any prints.
Never dealt with Wicks before, but there is a first time for everything.
Call me when you get a chance, so we can start working on the details.
I care, after all it's my company.

Good to meet you and look forward to framing your castle.
Keep up on the updates, talk to you soon. I care, after all it's my company.

They are sopose to backfill this wednesday/Thursday. I am helping my contrete guy pour the bacement floor on friday(taking the day off). After we are done with the concrete I am going to layout the cill plates and start installing them hopefully. Then on saturday frame the bacement walls and mark layout for floor joices. Sunday off and hit it really hard on monday and beyond.
I am trying to finish up siding a house right now, when I am done I'll be there.
I am fighting the weather right now, as you are probably too.
I'm going to bring one other guy with me, if thats cool by you.
What the problem is?
I will never or usually never turn down free help. Yea the bacement floor would have been poured last saturday but we decided that it was a little too risky with all of the pachy rain. I will be looking forward to meeting you and your worker. Stay dry man.
Good deal man.
My helper is a great worker, most of his experience is in roofing and siding. Not a whole lot in framing. But he works hard and listens. He cares about producing quality work, thats why I hired him.
I'll call when we are finished siding the current house.
What the problem is?
Thanks again man, did you try the directions?
Not yet I will right now.
What the problem is?
Well we poured the bacement floor on friday and it turned out just fine. Saturday We framed up the bacement walls and bolted down the cill plate. And today I finished up with some bacement framing details and tiried getting the water out of the bacement. Been raing like cats and dogs lately and no sign of letting up.
The rain has been nonstop here as well, we have been woking through it.
I am trying to get caught up here.
I don't have the keys to success.
I know how to pick the locks.
yeah, I hear ya. I worked today on the house (after my day job of corse) on the house through the drissling light rain. I was able to run 3/4 of the rim joice and about 1/4 of the floor joice by myself. I also did some clean-up and put tarps over all of the lumber. One more good night (without rain) and I should be able to get the joices all on.
Just finished setting all of the joices today. The now comes the floor sheating. I dont mind working through a little drissle but much more that that I dont want to lay a bead of glue on a wet joice. Once I get it sheated I can work in the bacement if it rains but not untill then. Lets cross our fingers it dosent rain on friday. Btw whats your schedule look like? You thinking of coming over on an evening or a weekend? I am taking thursday and friday off 28-29 so I will be there all day and night. Talk to ya latter.
I am still trying to finish siding this house, I am hoping by the middle of next week we'll be done.
Nights are probably out, we work until 5 or so and it would take me close to 45 min to get there. Not a whole lot of daylight left.
Next weekend may be an option, at least Saturday. If we finish siding by then maybe Thursday-Saturday. I'll see what happens in the next few days.
I don't have the keys to success.
I know how to pick the locks.
Maybe you will show up just in time to help with the garage walls. ( I hate doing garage walls) Try to stay dry.
Garage walls are my favorite, I stack 35-40 studs on edge and gang cut them with my 10-1/4" circular saw. It goes really quick.
A broom is drearily sweeping up the broken pieces of yesterdays life.
Well I think I may have bitten off more that I can chew. I have scheduled my framing crew buddys and the crane to come on the 7th which leaves me just under two weeks to frame all the walls and sheet the gables. I am going to call one framer who metioned that he would help( works for the same company) and try to have some extra hands to help. I hope we dont get this rain!! I thing I am still going to work through it even if it is raining just because I have to keep moving. Well I dont want to give you a guilt trip but I hope you and your helper can help out this weekend or so( weather permitting) any way have a good week
btw I think it is time to break out the halogen lights neighbors will just have to listen to the generator for a couple of weeks.
I'll see about this weekend, It may not be out of the question. I am almost done siding. I am thinking Thursday we'll be done. If the weather holds off.
Are you workin during the day, then working at your place at night? Just trying to get an idea of when you are there so we can be there too.
Try askin a neighbor for an outlet, that way the noise police don't show up. Tell them that you will pay half of the electric bill and everybodies happy. And so castles made of sand melt into the sea eventually
I called the power company and somehow they are coming tomorrow to hook up my electric like we scheduled a month ago which never happens. Yup day job until 3:30 then working on the house. I am taking all day Thursday and Friday off of my day job to work on my house , and of course Saturday, and probably Sunday too if the weather holds I just got to.
Well now I have all of the exterior house walls up and almost all of the interior walls up. On the exteriors I just sheeted the top 8' and left the ripper, foam and tyveck off untill we are ready for trusses. We also have 3 of 6 garage walls up without any sheeting yet. but friday my buddy from work came over and started to layout and snap garage wall lines and found that the garage wall that connects to the overhead door opening was 1' out of square!!!! Called my buddy at the poured wall company and he is coming over today with a bobcat to cut out and remove the bad section and have it all repoured tommorrow so I can hopefully be ready for trusses on saturday! Man I was sweating. weather has been cloudy with a very pachy drissle but I'll take it.
Holy cow 1' out of square is huge. Somebody was sleepin on that one. I first read it and thought you said 1" and thought thats not too bad. Reread and 1' is too much to hide anywhere.
You plan on swinging trusses on Saturday? I'll try to at least make it out for that and the roof sheathing. Weather has been killing me here. Can't get this house sided to save my life.
Yeah 1' I guess the guy holding the tape did not cut it 1' like the holder is suppose to, from the poured wall company. anyway they removed the bad section Sunday and re poured it today.
My buddys form our framing crews cant set my trusses this Saturday only next Saturday. But you had mentioned that you would be able to come out and help so I am wondering can I count on you for sure to come Saturday to set trusses (I have a crane coming)? And is this something that you would want to do? your helper? I may be able to get the framer that has helped me thus far to come saturday also. I will call you about 9:30 tomorrow mourning to check so I can call the other framers and possible the crane. Talk to you latter.
Sounds good, I have only got about 5 sq of siding and 50' of soffitt and facia left to put on. With good weather today I might get it done. So this Saturaday sounds good.
As far as is this something I want to do, yes it is I wouldn't have offered if not. Just crappy weather and the cultered stone guys holding me back. I have crawled through it at a slow pace and now we are just about done.
I don't mind getting wet I just hate to see my tools getting wet. Talk to you today sometime.
I'm in the same boat i'll get wet but I hate to see my tools in the weathr. saturday should be a go. I am going to try to take friday off If they will let me to get a little more done before trusses. talk to ya latter
Well how did it go today?
After yesterday you were in great shape when we left.
Not bad setting trusses at 8:00 am and at 4:00 pm having almost 70% of the roof sheathed.
Ronnie and I had a great time, and it was great meeting you and your other framing buddies. Good people you guys are.
It was a great day for working, and everyone worked together well. Not bad for the first day everyone meets each other. I wish my normal days with my crew went that smooth.
Post some pics of the finish roof, I'd like to see it done. Good luck.
I'll post more tonight after the lions game. We did ok framed the other roof back and framed most of the hip eyebrows I hear the tv goda go.
Sorry that it has taken soo long to respond just been working alot. Well so far you and your helper have left his sweatshirt, your insulated flannel, one or two coils of nails, your vice grips and your drywall square. let me know if one of your guys is in the area.
I hope to get the ice and water shield and tar paper/felt on the roof this weekend when the weather breaks.
The windows just showed up at the showroon so I will be looking to finish the foam and tyveck and get them installed in about a week or so.
I'll try the pics sorry they are large I just havent figured out how to compress them yet.
The guys came back over sunday and sheeted the garage on the overhead door side and or corse framed the gable back to the main. and we framed up a couple of eyebrows. When they left ( noon) there were 35 sheets to left and my buddy and I sheeted it all after work one night not too bad for a trimcarpenter!
Talk to you latter.
No problem, I realize you are a busy guy.
I caught a glimpse of the valley I had framed, you guys figure out how to sheet it?
I forgot to tell you before I left about running the sheeting past the edge of the 2x valley plate.
I looked for my flannel the other day, for about an hour before I realized I left it somewhere. Now I know where.
Holy cow I left half my stuff there, I may have to catch up with you about that list of stuff.
Not bad for trim carpenter is right, you did well out there. Better than some I have seen claiming to be framers.
Good luck on the dry in. Weather is changing in a hurry.
well I got all of the roof dried in except for the sides of the garage that are over the garage doors so no big deal.
And about sheeting --no problem just let the sheets run past the 2 by.
the other day I got most of the chimeny framed up as well as the stairs.
I think I am making good progress.
If you want to hook me up with one of your hepers in kzoo I can dump the stuff off to them or brian-brent? your helper I ment, his wife works in kzoo I could even give her the stuff.
ok I am dead tired talk to you latter
..."o.k. let me have it for building so close to the inlaws!) :) tell us you're not crazy...........
