My submersable pond pump failed so I’m looking for a new one. The one That died was 2000 GPH with an 1 1/2″ outlet.
I’m not sure what to do. There are cheap throw away pumps ( like the one that died) and ones that say they are better.
At the local pond store they wanted around $300.

look to see if the pump housing is packed with pond scum...
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming
WOW!!! What a Ride!
Forget the primal scream, just ROAR!!!
I took it apart as far as it would go and everything was fine. I plug it in and it runs for about 20 seconds.
I skim the pond every time I plug in the pump and i put chemicals in it every week.
So the water is fairly clean.
So, I guess the thermal switch kicks in because it is not happy? Not happy?
I took it to the pond place and they said it was burnt out.
Inside there is a sealed motor with a Chinese sticker on it. Completely sealed with epoxy.
the pond and pump were here 2 years ago when we bought the place so i don't know how old the pump is. I've treated it well but these things happen.
A lot of these items are throw away replaceable items. I don't like it but what are you gonna do? "There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers

Thanks!
I think i found the one I want. http://www.pondliner.com/product/Fish_Mate_2000_Pond_Pump/fish_mate_pumps
It has an adjustable valve and outlet for one more fountain.
The splashing from the waterfall or fountain helps cover up the noise from traffic. "There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers
The one I got from them is at least4-5 years old.Good folks,,I put it on the bottom, inside a plastic box, kinda thing, with screen type, small holes in the sides. and it keeps the stuff that is big enough to plug it , outta the pump, and you dont have to clean any kind of a pump filter all the time ,or ever..

We have a filter up behind the waterfall but i figured we didn't need it so I took the guts out of it. Water just goes straight through it now.
I put my pump up on a ledge in the pond so it isn't at the bottom.
We don't have fish or plants so it's pretty easy to keep up.
I skim (with a skimmer net) the pond every day when I plug in the pump so it stays pretty clean. "There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers
I bought one from lowes and when it burned out, I took it back and they replaced. No questions asked.
It ran 24/7 because of the Koi in the pond.
I also use a bottom filter that is before the pump. Seems to help keep sediment and any other foreign matter out of the intake.
I did see some from Lowes. I'll take another look. How long did you have it?"There are three kinds of men: The one that learns by reading, the few who learn by observation and the rest of them have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."Will Rogers
almost a year and new is going strong. Price seems good, especially when starting out.
as for the filter, the pond places say to double the filtration ratesof the HD and lowes type filters because many of the ratings are for areas that are shaded and lower temps in the summer. They were specifically talking about Calif.
I use a UV light+filter and it really did make a fifference, along with a bacterial type additive. The bacterial keeps the algae down, just turn off the UV light for 24 hrs when adding the bacteria
If I had to do it all over again, I'd do an exterior filter/pump setup. I couldn't because the lower, shallower area was the was the most visible. I'd also not use koi and go with the bright colored "jumbo" goldfish. You won't loose then with a pump failure, like you will with koi. They say 100gals per koi(or 10 gals per inch) to keep the happly and to grow large
