I built what’s depicted in the attached file, including replacing a 3’0″ door with a 6’0″ french door and now need to figure out the best way to provide a roof over that area.
I intend to cover most of the deck’s width (12’6″) and extend to overhang about 5′ with a 3/12 pitch shed roof. locating posts are a problem because as you can see from the drawing, the railing posts are not parallel to the house and therefore can’t be extended up to support the roof.
So, my thought was to have more like an angled brace (4×4 probably) that attaches and bears on the exterior wall of the house, each end, to support the modest heft of the shed roof.
surely this has been done before?

Thank you. I've never attached anything to a post before.
